I have an msata port on my M17xR4 and want to know if I can use the EVO 850 msata in my laptop. It looks like all msata's use the same form factor (there are the m.2 msata's that are twice as long and may or may not fit), but as long as it is the msata standard, it should work right?

I was looking at this one:

Same price I paid for the Samsung 840 EVO 1 TB. I bought it about a month ago I imagine the 850 is a little faster then the 840. Although you can complain with the 840. Well I have the Alienware 18 and I replaced the MSATA SSD that came with my AW18. But mine was set up to boot to the MSATA drive already. I just cloned the 256 gb drive. I purchased a MSATA USB enclosure and cloning software Acronis True Image. If you need to clone don't buy the enclosure from Newegg it was from China and took a month. I ordered one from Tiger Direct that was delivered in a week. They are only like 25.00 so i just have an extra one.

But yes that drive will work. I've heard of people have issues with certain MSATA drive but never heard of anyone with a problem with Samsung.

Does it come with special software, I remember the early Samsung SSD/mSATA's had something that you wanted to load into memory so that they are optimized when you start installing software on them?

I think it was called samsung magician?

You need to remove the bezel around screen but no need to remove the entire screen to access keyboard.. palm rest also doesn't need to come off..

    Tom,
I am a little confused, Only the bezel around the monitor needs to come off? The mSATA port is to the bottom left side of the keyboard or to the left of the track pad?

mSata driver slot is covered under the palmrest in Alienware M17x R4. You will need to remove the screen (no need to disassemble it though, it comes off easily as one unit with all wifi, webcam and lcd cables), keyboard strip cover, keyboard and palmrest. It sounds a lot worse than it actually is. It can't be seen from the pictures on AW guide clearly, but wifi card and RAM can be replaced without removing the whole palmrest. Msata slot is however hidden under the palmrest itself and does not have a separate cover as RAM, so the whole thing has to come off.
