Last night i was playing Crysis 2 and in the middle of a level the screen went black. The fans were running full power, the audio still played like normal, it was just no video output. I restarted the pc and opened gpuz and found that the gpu had gotten up to 72 C when the screen went black. Is this a normal condition? I am aware of the thermal throttle at 78C, but its strange that the screen would black out at 72C. I didnt have the GPU over clocked (standard clocks and voltage form the factory).

Your GPU wouldn't have blacked out at 72C the chances are, it black out at 78C and during the time that it was out and the restart, it probably cooled to 72C. I've heard reports of this happening before but the cases were rare. Maybe phone up Dell and get the card replaced?

On second though, it would have been a very bad paste job. Me thinks your card hit the 78C threshold, started throttling but almost immediately shut down because the temps were rising too quickly. Either way, phone up Dell, get the card replaced and do everything the same again. If the problem persists, then post about it again here :)

Thing is, the laptop doesnt shutoff. The screen blacks out but the fans, audio, and everything else run like normal. I have to manually shut it down (holding the power button :|). The original paste job was horrible, ive repasted and put new thermal pads all around. If i run crysis 2 with hwinfo fans at max RPM it wont crash, this instance i forgot to turn on hwinfo and it maxed out the temps on me.

you shouldn't have to have the fans set by an outside tool so it doesn't black screen. Even if it gets to the throttle point, it will simply thottle. It should never blackscreen

To me, there is something wrong with this and it should be addressed via warranty immediately

with the machine so new, dell will not hassle you about returning it or getting another one. THe issue for me is that if you wait too long, eventhough its covered under warranty, dell will only fix it with refurb parts. So take care of it now while you are still within the 20 day trial period.

Sure hope not, when i did the heat sink half of the pads were missing and the screws were messed up..... Since i repasted and re padded the GPU will they say anything about it? The old paste job was horrible, and thats giving it a little credit.

    regards,
    Howard C

They shouldn't say anything. I've read reports of techs complimenting members here with the paste jobs. But you can't not get this repaired or returned either way

Haha, i wouldnt know what to say if a tech complimented my repaste job :p It definantly runs a lot cooler, but still hits the wall at 72C. Guess ill call them back, hope they have a card in stock to replace mine if its damaged, dont want to wait another 4 weeks......
