Thanks to a design flaw and stupidity I placed a Sd card inside my dvd drive. Now the dvd drive makes a constant noise, the dvd that was in it won't eject and my laptop will no longer start up.
I'm screwed aren't I? Any ideas? Thanks

remove the drive from the laptop and carefully remove the card and disk. power it up without your DVD drive to make sure all is well then try again with the drive reinstalled incase the DVD unit itself is screwed.

How on God's green earth did you shove that SD card into your optical drive while a DVD was in there? My mind's just not picturing it. You may need to buy a long pair of tweezers and fish that card out from inside. It will not be easy. You're system shouldn't have an issue booting up with an optical drive error though. That doesn't make sense either.

Disassemble the laptop, remove optical drive carefully, remove top cover of the drive, remove disk and sd card, reassemble and hope optical drive is still working.
If laptop doesnt boot with optical drive, then try booting without it.
If you want I can post the procedure to open up the optical drive, rest are available here. -
Disassembled it and gosh it was no easy task to reach the optical drive :s.
Anyways I opened it up, took out the dvd and sd card and now it seems to work perfectly again.
Also to check if all connectors are working properly is there some test I can do? I did Alienautopsy, but not sure that's enough to check if everything is working perfectly. -
Good to know your baby's alright.
As long as everything is working, connectors should be alright. For example, if palm rest is not working after assembly, its not plugged in properly and physical connector should be the first thing one should check, same goes for other components -
Be careful which slot you stick your card into next time!

Just a side thought- the boot issue was probably because OP had DVD drive before primary HDD in boot order. Obviously it couldn't read the err.. SD card
-
To be honest I have almost done the same thing. I went to place the plastic SD card filler thingy....that ships in the laptop back in the slot and due to the fact that the drive is right below I slid it in and almost shoved it right in the drive so I can understand how it might happen if your not looking right at the drive. On a plus side I have never come close to doing it again lol

I came here to say that I have done this before. You are not alone.
I wasn't really paying attention and reached to the right side without looking. I stuck the card right in the blu-ray slot. I freaked out immediately when I didn't feel it engage the card mechanism. Luckily it was just flush with the slot and came out with a little coaxing and a pair of tweezers. I think the slot loading drive is not a good design choice. It's cool and all but it's pretty easy to accidentally stick an SD card in it. Also, if you have some kind of OS failure with a game disk stuck in there, you are in for some fun. You have to boot with a Linux USB flash drive or something to get access to an eject function. There is no emergency release that I know of.
The good news is that this is a dumb thing that you will only do once. I have looked carefully at the side of the laptop every single time I put my camera card in since that day. -

No manual eject button on our slot-loading optical drives. It was left out for "design reasons".
-
LOL I did the same thing. Don't feel bad. Luckily I was able to get it out with a toothpick
. Would be nice for mentally challenged people like me if they would put that slot farther from the DVD one.

I have seen this many times in the past, you are definitely not alone haha. At least you got it out.

Signed up just to add my voice to the chorus of "You are not alone", did this last night

Dude...one of my friends was asking me one day what I was doing pulling the whole dvd drive out when I was trying pry the sd card out. I was too ashamed to tell him the truth but now I feel much better knowing that I was not alone in this. Thanks people for also sticking it in the wrong slot.
