Would it be possible to install the HDD above into the laptop on the first boot (as in, can I just replace the standard 640 GB HDD before booting up and just insert the Windows 7 installation disc after that with no issues)?

Also, would I need an additional cable if I buy a bare drive off New Egg?

If you mean swapping the 640Gb HDD with the Seagate one and fresh install windows 7 on it then YES!

your M17X R2 can have both hard drives installed as well.

and you can boot off the Xt ince you install Windows on it.

So Install the XT drive, Install Windows, Install updated Drivers, then put the old 640 Gb drive back in.

You can leave the OS on the old drive as well, and if the XT ever fails you could boot off the old drive if needed.
