confused...your sig says 1.5gb GTX460m ?
-
that was my old one. returned and got the 6970M and this is happening right outta the box
-
Plz guys....im on the phone with technical support but i seem to know more about computers than they do. They are complete morons...
-
Check the refresh rate within windows, I've seen this happen when it selects a refresh rate of 59 Hz instead of 60 Hz for some insane reason, and then games follow suit.
-
Another thought I just had if the previous doesn't work, try switching to the IGP, and then blowing away and reloading the AMD drivers. Could be a bum install.
-
wheres the refresh rate located?
-
cancel that the refresh is set at 60hz. so how do i go about uninstalling and reinstalling drivers?
-
First go download the newest driver set, either from Dell or from AMD (not sure which is better at this point), then go into the control panel, Programs and Features, and look for the AMD Radeon Driver package, or AMD Catalyst Drivers, something like that.
Uninstall them, and reboot. When you come back in, it will install a bunch of default drivers, just let it, or cancel when it asks you for permission. Then install the driver package you downloaded and reboot and cross your fingers. -
fail. the tech guy took over my comp and did all that. he said its probably a bad gpu or screen. im inclined to believe him as if i shake my computer this happens as well XD probably the gpu since it works fine wen its on the igp
-
Yeah, if a fresh driver install didn't help, and especially if the IGP doesn't show the same symptoms, bad GPU it is.
Bummer dude. Tested prior to ship? Booooooo! -

One thing you may want to check is trying to reseat the GPU, I had my 6970m slightly off of a full seat in the slot and it was giving me issues, may be worth a shot.

Looks like the grey screen of death from a bad GPU or overheating. I agree that the housing could be wrong, but why risk it. The only bummer is that you just got it

No risk at all, if you're not comfortable doing it yourself call tech support and ask for an engineer to walk you through it. They'll let you do it and tell you how so that there's no risk at all, they also tend to be more helpful than the "half-retarded" first level techs they have.
-
meh its all good. they already sent my parts. hoping the tech they send isnt as retarded as some of the people i talked to today -_-' lol

I'd still try, your current card is new, the card they send is a guaranteed refurb.
-
I know exactly what that is. It's happened to me on several laptops (right after I've upgraded the screen).
The screen data cable is not securely connected at one or both ends (where it connects to the screen or where it connects to the MB).
You said it happened after you shifted your weight. That would explain it. That small jolt was enough to unseat the display connector if it wasn't inserted correctly to begin with.
Open up your laptop, and reseat the connection on the MB. If that doesn't work reseat the connection inside the screen (that will take some work to get it apart). One of those is guaranteed to fix it. -
Looks like the video card has bad memory. I get this if I overclock my 6970M past 1200MHz on the memory, so I have somewhat simulated the problem. I will either get the bars or the screen may go off to one side like your photos.
The fact that you getting this at stock speeds can only mean the 6970M ram on the mmx card is taken a big brown dump.
Get a replacement laptop if its not to late (likely best option), or if you don't care about a tech replacing the video card, just have the part replaced. -
Sooooo...Dell tech dude came to replace my graphics card and LCD screen today. He proceeded to open my baby up very roughly which i did not apporve of. REplaced the graphics card doing a ty job on the thermal paste. then proceeded to replace my screen. Except Dell didnt give him a top up replacement. They just gave us the LCD screen so he proceeded to try to take the cover off the original screen
after prying at it with a screw driver for 20 minutes he realizes that there are 2 screws he didnt see -_-' we then get the cover of and he tries to transfter the component of the old screen to the new one. Mic/camera:check. ALienware head LED:check. Alienware head diffuser for LED: cracked in half. He then called up alienware for not sending a complete top replacement and blamed it on them. He put the original screen back together and back on. Now my Alienhead has an eye missing cuz the diffuser is cracked....ok so he puts the comp back together and turns it on. Oops keyboard isnt working. Takes him another 25 min to put the keyboard cable in the mobo correctly. K now we get windows up. LEts install the graphics driver. Yea that doesnt work so he calls Dell again and they tell him to tell me to call them and let them do it. So he leaves after fixing nothing and actually making my computer worse (poked out eye on alienware head and scratches and such). I call Dell tech supoort and they are on my comp for 2.5 hours trying to install drivers. (as a side note one of the times i was on hold, the MALE dell rep started looking up pictures of Ricky Martin on MY computer!, the manager later apologized for that as he didnt realize he was still on my screen). So after 2.5 hours I get a "we dont know whats wrong we'll get back to you in 24 hours". and i hate Dell after this....this beotch is most likely going back... -
-
First off, who is Ricky Martin? Lol jokes aside.
Ask them for a replacement with a free upgrade for all the hassle.
The techies are never careful with other peoples things. I remember the time when a tech was going to replace the keyboard of my previous computer (a M15x which is now dead). When he was turning the computer upside down, he was sliding his hand WITH A RING all over my lid.
I wish you the best of luck -
It makes me wonder sometimes how these "tech repair people" get their job, when it seems some, not all, have no idea what they're doing.
Definitely seek a replacement. -
-
epic
Tech retardedness is expected. Ricky Martin meat spanks is what made this story gold!
I'd be all over Dell about the rep using your computer for personal jollies. ALL OVER them.
Like full refund AND a new system. That's completely unacceptable. -

Don't ask for a replacement, it wouldn't be a good thing right now, I've had a replacement on order for 2 weeks now and it's not even in production. Alienware has always allocated parts to 1-new orders 2-repairs 3-replacements and in that order so you're looking at longer to get a replacement than return it for a refund and reorder. I would recommend asking for a return with an instant credit plus $100 credit for an instant reorder. The easiest way to get this is to let them know that if they don't give you an instant refund+compensation for the "horrible experience" that you will get the refund and buy an Asus. AW hates Asus for some reason so they'll most likely take care of you that way. If they refuse ask for it to be documented on your account and get in touch with the "Unresolved Claims" department that you can find info on over in the replacement thread of the main AW forum.

Tech do not read service manuals (in most cases) before they turn up at your house.
I had a two different techs around to remove something as simple as the Media Centre Bar or keyboard surround on my R3.
It is evident that they don't bother, or Dell does not require them to read / look at the service manual before they work on your machine. This is especially true with the R3, as to think of how many of these notebooks do the techs actually get to service, which is likely not many if any.
For example I have a Dell D630 that had a faulty Nvidia 8400 integrated onto the systems motherboard. The tech had already replaced loads of these over the past few years, he knew where everything was and the job was done without a hitch. Then you go to the R3, they don't even know which way the back cover slides off. -
I've had good luck with the techs on an older M1710. But I also had great service from sending it in to the depot too.
-
Ruthless. I would have stopped him as soon as he started treating my computer like a shop tool. Sounds like the tech didn't take much pride in his work. And its a new computer so you should be able to enjoy it's "new " condition for some time. Computer Returned for sure. Definitely some free shwag at least for being a patient customer.
