Hi everyone. Today I made a clean clean install of Widows 7. Everything was ok until the moment I downloaded some updates from windows updates. After the process finished, i should have reboot the pc. And when I rebooted the machine, the screen remained black. And the fan started venting and became very loud. I couldn't hear the Windows Login sound, so I suppose that it didn't even launch windows. I had to turn off the machin with the power button by force. When I switched it on, it became normal and launched windows normally.

Ok, then I made another wave of update from windows update (about 128 with all the security updates) Everything finished. I had to reboot again. And now, same problem: black screen and fan vents very loudly. I pressed on the power button to switch it off, then switched the laptop on. Guess what? This time it didn't even work. I tried a few time with the same process and whatever i did, the screen remained black with the loud fan's sound.
I called a friend, he told me to remove the battery and disconnect the power supply cable. I did as he said, wait for 30 sec, and then switched it on. Amazing! It worked again. I was happy to log in windows and started playing Diablo 3 until 10 minutes ago, I made a new wave of windows updates, and I had to reboot again. And the problem came back once again. I am really tired with that. Now everytime I tried to reboot the laptop, I have the blackscreen and the sound of the fan. I don't know where the problem come from

    So in my opinion:

    1. It is not a graphic card cable contact problem, because they work perfectly without any interruption during games, works and movies. the 4870 crossfire just work perfectly with the Dell official site Drivers.
    2. I don't know why when I take off the battery and disconnect the power cable, it works. But when I tried to reboot once again just after that, it doesn't work.
    3. I have 2 SSD 256GB set on Raid 0. The raid mode is enabled in the BIOS. I also flashed my old BIOS to a newer version as my friend suggest(even if I don't know if it is a BIOS problem)

So I want to hear you guys opinion. Please help me, I am really tired to switch off the laptop each time I need to reboot. Thank you in advance.

Ooh, dude. Lower the big bold fonts next time.

Back to your problem: You can excuse Windows or Windows updates in regards to your black screen issues. It sounds more like a hardware or BIOS malfunction. Have you ever heard of POST? It stands for Power On Self Test. Basically, its the BIOS testing the CPU and memory when you power on or reboot the system. That's what all those lines of writing are that flash across the screen after the Alienware logo after startup. The BIOS is checking to make sure everything it kosher before it hands off to the SSDs to start windows. The way you are describing it signifies the system is not even POSTing.

One thing to try, remove the main battery, the power cable, and the CMOS battery. The CMOS battery is a button battery which saves your individual BIOS settings when the system is powered off. Unplugging it will reset the BIOS back to factory settings, it will NOT set your BIOS back to an older version. To unplug the CMOS battery, unscrew the bottom cover of the R1, and you will see the button battery right next to your second SSD drive. It's wrapped in black plastic with a red and black wire leading from it to the motherboard. Unplug it from the motherboard. Then, once you have everything unplugged, press and hold the laptop's power button for 30 seconds. This will make certain to reset the BIOS back to factory settings. Then plug the button battery back it, screw the bottom cover back on, and plug the main battery and power adapter back in. Power on and at the Alienware logo, press F12. This should bring up a list of startup options. Select the one at the bottom labeled "DIAGNOSTICS". It may also be labeled PSA Assessment. This is a comprehensive test which checks the motherboard, CPU and RAM for any hardware errors. Its pretty reliable. Once in the Diagnostics mode, follow the on-screen instructions and make sure to do all the test. It will ask if you want to do some extended memory test. Yes, you do. If it spits out any errors, write them down and post them here. That way we can find out what is the root cause of your black screens.

Well the problem comes back now. The machin randomly shut down without any sign. And after the shutting down, it will make the same issue that i mentionned in the first post. So I will definitely try Radji's method.
