I got a response to an ad I made on kijiji I'm regards to my laptop and someone responded and asked for my service tag and original shipping address. Is this standard information to ask for in regards to a private sale such as this?

In other words, can this person somehow scam me if I gave them that information?

Yes, because that is all the information they will need to transfer ownership of the laptop through the Dell/Alienware website.

To be fair, you might want to provide that information WITH the sale, not in advance thereof. Or offer to meet with them and be present when they transfer ownership.

Let's assume your service tag is ABCDE.

You can simply use window 7's snipping tool to get the warranty info off of Dell's site and erase the middle characters of the service tag to show A***E.

Send this to the potential buyer along with a photo of the service tag sticker on the laptop with the same characters erased to show A***E.

That should be enough proof i'd say.
