    Hi,

I have a R4 with a 680m. I recently got a 3D monitor and i was wondering if it is possible for me to play 3D games on my monitor even though my laptop screen isn't 3D.

I am running the latest beta drivers and the 3D vision is now bundled as a driver. my monitor came with a pair of 3D glasses.

I have been able to play 3D movies with no real issues on the monitor. But everytime i try to run the Nvidia 3D picture viewer i get a error saying primary display does not support Nvidia 3D vision. I am not sure what i need to do in order to setup 3D vision in order to play games.

Will i be able to run 3D games if i wanted to ? or is it totally out of the question.

    thank you.

Hi, it's a bit complicated (he says trying not to sound patronising ;)). The 3D your monitor is using, and the glasses, are the 3D TV type which is completely different from nvidia 3D. And way inferior. It uses a side-by-side image, one side for each eye and the circuitry in the monitor detects this and splits out the signals to an alternating full screen that the glasses are sync'd to. Upshot is that it's OK for films but gaming - forget it. You have effectively half the resolution, at a measly 24hz, and a huge latency overhead filling in all the gaps to make it look smooth.

What you are seeing is the NV driver producing the 3D in side-by-side

I have tried this using a 3D TV and controller lag @1080i makes it unplayable :(.

Nv's solution is for the video card to produce each frame in full res and at a playable real time speed. It is synchronised by a dedicated emitter that is installed in the 3D models.

So, The only way to get the 'real' 3D effect is to purchase an nvidia 3D vision kit and connect the monitor over the display mini-port - and make sure the monitor can accept a 120hz input signal. Just because they display in 120 (or more) Hz does not mean it can do it without all the clever and heavy circuitry which you don't want or need..

    HTH :D.

Edit: Just remembered, there is an NV product, 3DTVPlay for gaming on a 3D TV or monitor. It comes free with the 3dvision kit and the driver installs it when it 'sees' the NV emitter. If you have this component then it shows up under licences in the driver. Also IIRC you can get a trial version just to see if it works for you - but how to buy it, not a clue :(

And of course all the stuff I said about quality still applies.

Thank you, that was quite informational. I am going to sit down and spend some time trying to figure out what needs to be done.

    This is what i got for a 3D display PlayStation® 3D Display with SimulView™ Technology | PS3™ Accessories -PlayStation®

Cool, but I can now say that only 3DTVPlay from nvidia is going to work with that device. When I plug mine in the 3D resolution becomes available on the external screen. When I select it the driver outputs the TV type signal and it auto-switches.

At 720p resolution it is not that bad and since most games are drawn to this res for consoles, no great loss of granularity. You also get 50hz and can use the HDMI port for connectivity.

Try to track down that 3dtvplay thing, it should be a no cost test and no risk...

    Good luck.

found this other thread on the general forums http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/680339-using-nvidia-3d-vision.html

sounds like this may be a bigger pain to figure out. And possibly not worth it.

It just worked for me on my 3D TV and the driver had the option. I believe it is device specific though and the driver has to support the monitor. Easy to find out if it's going to be straightforward.

    Nice find.

Seems like it should work, but when i install 3D vision it says primary adapter not supported. I am starting to wonder if this not supported as a compatible display

Strange. Try the Fn-F7 and reboot to force the NV maybe? Do it with the monitor connected as well so it can see that.

Is it connected over HDMI and is the cable 1.4? I read that this added 3D extensions by signal.

Do you have a dell or clevo vbios. Probably nothing to do with it but you never know??

So i cant get it boot up with Nvidia graphics only. I know i have to do Fn + F7, when i do so i can see the laptop shut down and then try to turn on and then fail. About 2 seconds later it tries to turn on again and boots up successfully.

When i boot if i right click i can still see the intel graphic properties, which suggests to me that the dedicated graphics boot up did not work. I may have to try and re install my drivers.

Here's a pic of my GPU-z, i have Dell vbios

Well I'm afraid you've reached the limit of my experience . The biggest reason I went with the 120hz model was that there is no Optimus to deal with. When it works in the background all is great but for a gaming rig - no. I never run on battery.

Something is wrong that's obvious but I can't say for sure where the problem lies.

A driver re-install (clean) is the place to start. I'd also try disabling the Intel in the windows driver. A risky move though and you might end up with needing to go into safe mode to re-enable it :( ?

Maybe someone with switchable graphics can assist?

I re installed the drivers and it did not work. I have had a few BSOD's recently. I may just re install windows over the weekend and test it out.

    Thank you
