I am looking at upgrading my ram when I get my M17x R3 to Kingston HyperX 16GB (4 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600. I am wondering if it is a good idea to sell the stock 4Gb ram right away or hold onto them. Once the new ram is installed I won't have any need for them unless I have serious hardware issues with the laptop and I need to exchange it for a new one. It would be nice to get some money to help cover the cost of the upgrade. Let me know what you all think would be the best course of action.

I would keep it in the event the new RAM is bad or for some reason you need to revert it.

Or for warranty purposes/ in case you need to return your system!!

Also, you probably wont get much for yur second hand Ram anyhow - Ive just done this too (got the HyperX but not popped it in yet) and the thought did cross my mind of selling the old stuff.
I still am not 100% sure of the warranty regards to swapping out ram. These systems are designed to be user upgradeable, Dell knows this. The only reason that I can think of that it *may* void your warranty or you *may* want to keep the old stuff is that the HyperX is clocked at 1600 as opposed to 1333 that Dell put in.
Sure, the system will simply "downclock" the HyperX to that speed (1333) so its not like you are putting a component in that will shorten lifespan or do any harm.
Maybe Dell would take the standpoint that because it isnt 100% the *correct* ram to utilise, if its in and you need to RMA for any reason, they may turn around and say "sorry, you put parts in we dont approve of using - warranty voided"
So, thats the only reason i am keeping hold of mine - at least until I double check with Dell/AW what the status is of this upgrade in terms of warranty. If they say its fine, mine will be getting sold in a heartbeat and the cash pu towards an SSD or something... -

Steve the R3 supports frequencies above 1333Mhz so he'll be able to utilize the hyperX at its full cap.
Might as well keep the memory as Steve's right you won't get much for it and in case of a return even if Dell is ok with you putting other RAM sticks I don't think you'll be happy with returning your system with the HyperX in it.

too busy drooling over mine sate here ready to go into my R2
(good point too about having to return WITH the HyperX....I wouldnt want that to happen either!)

My R3 came with 1066 ram instead of 1333. Has anyone else had this issue. The only reason I noticed it was I replaced mine with 16GB of HyperX. When I put the old R3 ram in my wife's laptop it was the same speed she had. Is Dell trying to screw us?

If your wifes laptop doesn't support 1333Mhz frequencies than your memory was downclocked to 1066Mhz (max supported by that laptop). Just a thought.
What model is it? -

- I cant imagine Dell shipping you an R3 with 1066mhz ram.....but you NEVER know.....ive seen some guy on here with a notepad sticky between his gpu die and heatsink (maybe it was a novel new thermal kinda paper lol)

Her laptop does support 1333. She already had 4GB of 1333. I took out her 4 to test this so that they didn't have a problem running at the same speed. They did send 1066. Worked with support today and their mile long script and got an oops, sorry about that. Not everyone who posts on here is an idiot. Been building PCs for 23 years. Just wondered if anyone else had seen it, not to be questioned about my skills.

It was worth asking that question IMHO as it was not stated otherwise from the begining and for a man with such experience you should know also that mistakes happen and people can go "oups i forgot it can't support above 1067". -
