k guys, need your help. i have recieved a great deal. This guy is asking 1700 for an m17x, here are the specs:
    i7-920xm
    8gb Ram
    Bluray Player
    2x500gb 7200rpm HDD in Raid 0
    Windows 7
    Dual 5870 Xfire
    1900x1200p

i know right? good deal? the only problem is the warranty has expired completely on it. so i thought, no problem, ill just call up and buy a new warranty on it. i found out though that you cannot do that, and apparently once a warranty expires one cannot "extend" it.

now im bummed, i have NO idea whether to do it or not. i mean is there any way still to buy a warranty? i mean hell id pay 500$ just to get another one, but Dell is saying no, or should i just try more dell reps? please guys, ideas.

hm thats strange because from what i read you can renew and expired warranty. maybe because you are buying it then transferring it in your name and then requesting it? or maybe the people posts that i read where wrong?

but that deal seems to good to be true ill tell you that, thats a $3000 config your looking at, it really cant get any better besides getting an SSD

i wouldnt buy it unless its using ebay then if there is any problems your covered under the buyer protection program

i know. the guy is nice and trusting too. the only reason he is selling it is because he needs a smaller one since this one isnt too travel friendly for him, and hence, im guessing he travels. hes had this laptop for a while, and said it is in perfect condition and hasnt got anything wrong with it. either way, im more worried about the road ahead, if i get a bad motherboard down the road, im screwed.

i'd get it for sure... its like 1k less from what i paid. there again, in your situation, if you can afford new comp upon possibility of this one to break. so... but price too cheap for being true

I would pick up a system direct from dell outlet and buy the warranty ahead of time. Some members have reported getting a 920xm with xfire 5870 and RGB for less than $2k OTD. If you live in a state where there is no tax or ship to a state without tax you can probably get it for less than that and just add a 3 yr Complete Care. You said $1700 + $500 = $2200. I would imagine if you wait for a Scratch and Dent at 15% off or 20% off coupon on a refurb you should be able to get it in your price range. You also get stock 1 yr warranty and you can extend it later but always cheaper to buy upfront.

Many members have order from the outlet and when they had an issue with the system dell would send them a replacement refurb and they end up getting small upgrades due to the nature of how refurbs work and they send you out a config that is same or better. I have seen members get SSD, 920x,. 4870 bumped to 5870, 720 to 740qm bump, Bluray upgrade. Even if they for some reason send you a replacement that is downgrade you can have them ship parts out separately to fix it like Non-Rgb to RGB upgrade.

I guess what i am trying to say if it was my money and i am ready to drop $2200 i want to have my investment secured for 3 yrs and when i am ready to resell it will still have a warranty/resale value. Look at your situation..since the computer has no warranty you are ready to back out but if it had a warranty than you would buy for sure...RESALE VALUE.

the only problem is i only have 1700 right at this very moment, i meant that a few months down the road id be able to spend 500$ on a warranty, but as of this moment, i simply and only have 1700.00

If you trust the guy then I say get it. If you trust him I am making an assumption you know him personally and can test it or if not test it...he is afar but a FRIEND. If those conditions are true, then I would use this logic:
    1. 1700 (us dollar after tax I assume?) is about 2000 OFF a new one. That config still goes for about 3700-4k out the door after taxes.
    2. If your CPU goes bad...buy another on ebay for 400
    3. If the gpu's go bad buy 2 more on ebay for like 600 (down the road they will be cheaper with the 6970s)
    4. With the potential unlocked bios there could be a chance you can sell the 5870s in a year and get 6970s.

....either way you are ahead so much cash flow in the bank that you can afford to fix any problem down the road. You can pay for people to work on and replace parts OUT of warranty with all that savings.

I have the exact same config (minus one HD and blu-ray player) and paid 2k after taxes from the outlet WITH 20% off. So that is a good 300 in options you have over me and 300 cheaper. That is 600 bucks and I got a HELL of a deal.

Pull that trigger if the above options are true. If not, it could be because it is a dead system or he knows something is really off. Only a savvy seller knows that NOW is the time to sell because of the R3 coming soon and the flood of R2's hitting the Outlet at amazing deals with financing options; therefore limiting his buyers due to straight up cash.

well, one thing i will point out is that hes not necisarrily a friend, i mean i have not met him. but im leaning more towards pulling through with this and still trying to get a warranty

are you sure about this? because that would be awesome. has something similar like this ever been done? because right now the r2's arnt compatible with anything higher then the 5870s correct?

I don't think it is certain, but the possibility is very real as reported on another forum from the people doing the Bios unlocking. The cooling is definitely there and I believe joker said the 6970's (at a glance) may fit. The m15x I THINK can fit a 5870 and it wasn't made for it. I have an inkling that the 6970's will fit. If not, with the bios unlocking and having more access to fan control, OC'ing the i7s will be amazing and provide better OC of the 5870s which are still very capable.

Then another consideration is to wait a few months and get the same deal from the outlet with warranty and upgrade it. Tech is great IF you can wait. If you need something now I would suggest:
    1. Take your chances using the previous logic. It's an amazing price and you can pay to get replacements if you are tech savvy.
    2. Get a slightly lesser config from the outlet for 1700.

It should work out as dell makes a LOT of money on warranty and it's not for the consumer, but to drive sales and increase their margins. A small few ever use warranty. However with AW...it makes perfect sense to have it (lots of powerful and cutting edge components)
