I just ordered the AW 17 on sunday and it only comes with a slot load DVD drive and I am looking for a slot load blu-ray drive that fits in the same spot.

    anyone got any recommendations?

I'd avoid sony but panasonic and LG are typically pretty good.

They do you just have to remove the bezel. Pop it off with your hand.

We have always used Panasonic and LG, any slot load BD drive should do the trick.

Yep and it's plug and play :). The only thing the drive I have doesn't do is eject with the exact key on the alienware 17 I had to make a macro for it to do it. It's a firmware compatibility issue with it.

Got it changed and yeah I'll show you how to macro it if you have the same problem
It could just be the drive I bought.

OK, just got and installed my slot-load BD drive and i am running into the same problem as hackintoshiope had where fn +F4 wouldn't eject the disc and so I need help setting up the macro for it.

    Thanks :D

    EDIT: figured it out :D

    1) download something called nircmd and extract to a folder on your PC. - download nircmd here
    2) in alienware tactx click on the macro key you wish to use and select "assign shortcut"
    3) follow the information format in the pic below and click OK:

you know it will work because it will still go through the eject/opening process even when there's no disc in the drive.

    Guys, good day,

I have a Alienware 17 and i have blu ray reader but not a burner. However I do have a Blu ray burner which is the regular 12mm thickness. The current one is 9mm. How do you fit it in. I have tried but I am unable to get set it properly due to the extra thickness.

Previous models accommodated 12mm. Kindly help me.

If the bay is designed for thinner drives then you cannot put a larger thickness drive in it.

If your original drive has a 9mm thick drive the mounting bracket is wrong - you need to get the bracket that fits the 12mm thick BluRay drive; this bracket is shallower than the 9mm type.

I know this because I have had both variants open in front of me at the same time. The laptop chassis/ drive bay is the same on both types.

You could contact Alienware rep Luis Porras on here - he's a helpful guy and may be able to give you the Dell part number for the correct ODD bracket.

One of the part numbers is YXKK2 but I don't know if that's 12.7mm or 9.5mm and I am certain Luis will be able to clarify; If yours has this marking at least you can eliminate it, and if it doesn't you will know what part you need.........

It's probably going to be horrendously expensive and you could make one with some thin metal sheet and basic tools for a few pence/cents.

    Good luck

    Dave

I bought a panasonic UJ265 which is 12.7mm according to spec and the bracket that came with the original drive fitted fine for me.

I' m looking to buy a bluray burner for mine. I have the new alienware 17 and it has a 9.5mm drive with the 039K42 ODD bracket.
I assume the other one listed here is the one I need?
    My bracket actually says: VASOO.ODD.9.5.BRACKET
    ECOUJOOOGOO

    Dell PN: 039K42
    CN-039K42-GCSI1-46B-1710-A00

I don't really want a 9.5mm bluray burner because it seems it's slightly more expensive and seems like it's a slower burner for BD-R...?

EDIT: Looks like it is 0YXKK2 that I need? However, I cannot find it anywhere to purchase.
