Hey, so I ordered a slot loading blu ray drive and there is this metal bar that does not move and blocks discs from entering the drive... Anyone know how to fix this or should I just return the drive?![]()

Obviously, that shouldn't be there. It looks like some of the internal components have worked free and caused the obstruction. I'd return it and get another as any optical drive that you cant actually put a disc in is rather pointless, innit?

Yeah, I just figured I'd ask as a lot of broken stuff is very easy to fix and that's much faster than waiting on another one. I thought it may just be a piece that slipped out of track or something but it simply does not move at all in any direction so doesn't seem like that.

Unless it shipped with a disk in? HV3 you tried ejecting?

There was no disk in it, when it's hooked up to the laptop it does nothing other than make some noises at boot up and when you select it in my computer. I was also able to lift the top portion of the drive up enough to get a disc into it over the top of the metal bar but once the disc is in the drive still reads as no disc and makes noises like it's continuously attempting to eject the disc. The metal piece blocks discs from ejecting as well although with a disc in it does appear that the purpose of the metal piece is most likely to keep discs steady inside the drive as it leans slightly so that the discs edge sits under it. I'm guessing that piece is simply completely jammed or supposed to have something that makes it move that isn't present.
Currently I've opted to just put the Alienware up for sale listed with no optical drive, have a few responses so far and no one seems to care about the lack of an optical drive so hopefully it will still sell reasonably quickly. -

It's not a brand new laptop I bought it with a shattered screen so I replaced the screen with the 1920x1080 panel and now I'm selling it. Apparently it had an optical drive but the guy sold that to a friend of his so I ordered one and it's clearly broken so I'm just going to sell it without the optical drive.

Dunno why you just don't buy a used optical drive and install it. They are reasonably priced on Ebay for a DVD drive.....
-
That's where I got this one from and they have refunded my money and don't even care what I do with the drive which kind of makes me assume it's probably not worth repeatedly ordering if they don't even ask anything or want the drive back to fix.

Well it's the arm designed to keep the disc in and the mechanism was obviously faulty, seems like an easy thing to check :/
-
One would think it would be pretty noticeable since it cannot accept discs and is clearly visible by looking at it. That's eBay level quality control though it's always pretty random what to actually expect since every person and company has different standards and you may simply be buying drives off a 12 year old who bought a box of them at a flea market.

I fixed it. Since they gave me a refund and didn't care if they got it back so I went ahead and took it apart. That metal piece is supposed to spring back and forth but the portion leading up to it was bent so I flattened it out and removed a plastic cover piece that has some spurs on it. The drive itself works fine now and doesn't continuously eject discs anymore so I should just be able to file down the plastic piece and put it back on also. Looks like it's only purpose is to act as a little guard piece that would stop you accidentally shoving discs in under the metal piece instead of going over the top of it.

Cool, glad you got it sorted out! - nice that it ended up not costing a thing too....
Slot loading Blu-Ray won't accept discs.
