So, I FINALLY managed to bite the bullet and buy a new laptop (been looking for months and was dragging my feet WAY to much looking for the perfect buy).

Anyhow, ended up with an m17x R2 off the 'Bay. Just wonderin how I did! (Upgrading from a Clevo M57RU with a GTX 8800)

    Specs:

    M17x R2

    Windows 7 HP 64bit

    17" RGB 1920 x 1200

    i7 840QM
    8GB 1066 DDR3
    Dual 1GB HD 5870s
    500GB HDD
    Blu Ray (Reader)
    Intel Wi-Fi
(Keyboard, screen, casing in flawless condition)

...so I ended up haggling with the guy and making offer after offer and nabbed the system for just under $1400 shipped. So...worth it in yer guys's opinions or did I overspend?

My only (for now) question would be, any benefit to aftermarket memory?

Good deal. Grab some 6990M's to replace those :)

I'd wait on the 6990s until some of the guys in this forum have successfully gotten them to work... But that's just me.

I think you did well. You absolutely love the RGB led screen. That May be your favorite part.

Side note. Ill be trying the 6990s. I don't see why they wouldn't work. They work in the 15x and are just like 6970s with a higher clock speed and more shaders.

Id love to upgrade to dual 6970s or 6990s (probably would lean to the 6970s though). But while I am rather hardware proficent...I have never done a vid card upgrade in a lappy before. (and I am guessing the cost...will be HUGE)

Yeah 6970's can be had for $600+ for a pair and 6990s for $800+
