Wasn't the M17x supposed to come with a wireless HD transmitter? I see it for the m14x, but not the m17x?

since its now available for the m14x stands to reason it will soon be made available for the m17x, pretty sure you will be able to buy one as a dell part. at an inflated price of course.

I chatted with a Dell rep today and they told me that it is available for the m17x. They told me to call in my order and request it to be added to the configuration.. They also told me that the same wireless hd package that the m14x has available will be updated on Tue configuration page very shortly. If you want it right now though, you will have to call in your order. Probably the best idea anyway to get the best price possible.

So I talked to my EPP rep today and she advised me that WiHD is impossible for my R3. She said that there are two different mobo they use in the R3 and that the one I got isn't compatible with the WiHD card. For reference my mobo part# is 5VYM9. She said the only way I can do WiHD is to buy an external solution.

If this is true, I'm going to raise f'n Cain with Dell! There are numerous pre-launch videos of reviewers using WiHD. It was a big reason on why I purchased this machine. I sincerely hope this isn't the case.

I just spoke to the guy I order the m17x r3 on the chat line and he told me that the system comes already with the wihd, there is no need to add it extra.

I doubt this is true, but if there is no WIHD card which is supposed to come with my system, it will give me no choice but to return it to DELL. This may be a good cause for me to get the m18x when it comes out.

I specifically mentioned to the sales rep. that I want the WIHD from the beginning... Let's see when arrives :)

04/22/2011 10:38:51AM Agent (XXX): "XXX laptop already has wireless display support"
04/22/2011 10:39:44AM XXX: "so, what you mean is that the wireless HD is built already into the system?"
    04/22/2011 10:39:55AM Agent (XXX): "Correct"

    Please have a look here:

    Hope this helps...

Alienware need to hire people who actually know something about computers. It is totally BS to have to rely on luck to get some technician/support that knows what they are talking about. First person you talk to say this, while the other one says totally different. lol

WiHD have not been included in the M17x R3s so far. Alienware made a statement 2-3 months ago where they said they will add WiHD option later. If it is impossible for users without the WiHD addon card to get one later i don`t know. Seems easy enough from the picture i posted. There is a parts list of M17x R3 floating around somewhere where it is 2 different motherboard options listed.

"Unfortunately, he did not mention when we can expect to see wireless HD integration into Alienware products. It is more than likely, however, that future revisions of the current M11x, M15x, and M17x could very well sport wireless HDMI transmitters. "

Be aware that the reciever supports only up to 720p. A new one will come later with 1080p, Push2TV HD (PTV2000)

After clicking the "Build Yours" button from this link ( Alienware Laptops - Custom Gaming Laptops and Notebooks), the only laptop that was listed was the M14x... I had thought this would have been something that the M17x had too from AW/Dell's unclear marketing propaganda.

Edit: That link is for their WirelessHD tech.

The R3 review I watched on youtube produced way back in Feb I think clearly demonstrated a M17x R3 with internal card and external receiver link to tv hdmi, so this was a very early R3 with the card inside

has anyone actually looked if the card slot and cables are there ?

Of course I find this thread 12 hours after I order a brand new M17x. Other than wanting to get a new laptop that can handle most of what I throw at it, I wanted the WirelessHD.

Now the dilemma is if I should call and cancel my order before it goes in to production. The only reason why I am undecided on what to do is because I got the 22% off through Aafes and no tax and free shipping deal. I am not sure how much longer that deal will last.

    i7 2720QM
    4GB ram
    6970M
    BluRay
    Intel 6300

What's the odds I cancel and can find a similar deal when the option becomes available. I have read through some of the forums and it is unclear to me if I can purchase the add-on later to install myself.

WIreless HD cost 300$ and include lag which effect serious gamers with fast games.

This one is tested and reviewed by plenty of sites to be working with everything at 1080p uncompressed lag free

Can be used via power adapter or USB only

Best of all it's 130$ only
    http://www.amazon.com/brite-View-HD...EXNI/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1303515816&sr=8-6
Also i'm already reading that even though Wireless HD can handle 1080p signals, the Receiver Alienware is selling by Vizio can only steam 720p.

Also wireless HD signal is not super powerful. it can drop and can't pass walls, the device i mentioned can work cross floors not only rooms it's that powerful.

It also work with any HDMI device including Copy protected HDMI without any setup or software just plug and steam, Wireless HD require a software setup

I would call back asap or email the rep and say, hey I wanted this option, and I want to add it, I was told I needed to talk to someone about adding it. I want the wireless hd card option. Its a 100 bucks more for just the broadcast chip, but @260 us for the whole shebang. Now any smart sales person sees the potential for more money on their commision and should be willing to add it.

When you are spending this much for a laptop, never settle for less then you want.

I talked with my EPP as well, and I was told it was impossible as well. I canceled the order right there. I was told that the wireless HD would be part of the M17x R3. Where is it now? I am pissed. Not to mention I was supposed to be given a 21% discount as it applied to "alienware", only to find out it didn't apply to the M17x R3. Go figure......

There are 2 options for people who already own an alienware without the add on card:
    1. Buy WiHD kits with transmitters and recievers like the one HSN21 posted.
    2. Use WiDi for you people without 3D screens. Exact same as WiHD except you use the wireless card as a transmitter

I just called Aafes and cancelled my order. I then called Dell direct and was told that there is no current ETA when it will be available.

So hopefully in the future I will be able to order the laptop I want. Not sure how long the current 22% off at Aafes will last so even when available to purchase I might hold out for a deal.

Although the WiHD is a cool option, I was never going to really use it. I had planned all along to just use the HDMI and dock my laptop with my AV receiver/TV and use a wireless keyboard with track pad like the Logitech diNovo Edge.

Who wants a heavy 17inch desktop replacement sitting on their lap while in front of the TV.

The keyboard is not that much more than the Visio link that you would have to purchase separately anyway. And if you spill your beer on your keyboard you’re not replacing a $3,000 laptop.

Gah, that is really lame. I get my laptop in the mail and now the wireless HD option appears. Maybe I'll just buy that box on page 2, it's actually a lot cheaper and can push 1080p.

I've seen a bunch of videos on youtube about the difference between the WiHD and WHDI technologies and it appears that WHDI is the stronger of the two options. WiHD needs line of sight whereas WHDI doesn't. That alone is enough of a reason not to get WiHD. So i'm ok with not having it built in but i will say that I am extremely disappointed in the way Dell has handled this.

If anyone finds out that you can in fact put in this wireless transmitter into your laptop could you PM me please ?

I want to buy an Alienware M14x but here in the UK they dont offer wireless HD

So my options are to either buy it from the US or ask someone to order there laptop with wireless HD and then sell just the wireless transmitter and receiver to me

    Thanks

I talked to an online CSR and they told me if I wanted the WirelessHD package on my m17x (which has been received but not opened) I would have to call in and talk on the phone and arrange an exchange since he told me I couldn't buy the parts separately.

My laptop literally got ordered and shipped in about 9 days and then 2 days later the WirelessHD option comes out that I was waiting on forever but had to order the laptop due to the EDD. But I'm still 2 weeks away from even seeing my new toy... sigh~!

04/09/2011 05:04:42PM me: "do all m17x laptops come with that by default?"

04/09/2011 05:05:23PM Agent (Michelle R): "Yes. :) Would you like me to assist you further in your configuration?"

04/09/2011 05:06:02PM me: "well i just placed an order yesterday and wanted to know what i will need to get that to work"

    04/09/2011 05:06:12PM me: "do i need a tv receiver?"

OMF* . Do dell find their employees on the street or something? It may work similar, send data wireless, but it is NOT the same thing
