I've been on the edge constantly of switching to either the GTX 580m and ATI 6990m because this 460m is good and overclocks well, but it's certainly not the best.

It's coming close to Christmas, when I'm planning on buying one, but is it too late? Will I be out dated by the ATI 7xxx and the GTX 6xx shortly? Should I wait? Or should I get it?

And does anybody have any idea what the prices are? The 5000000000000 alienware reps i've talked to seem to thing the 580m and the 6990m don't exist and want to sell me the 6970m only....

    Also part numbers?

well i bought a 6990m and ended up with a dud it seems. Computer won't recongnize it at all. I think i might just sell my current machine and update with brand new machine with a 1080p screen and either a 6900m or 580, i haven't decided yet :D

you can grab either on ebay for around 800 bucks, which is alot. or wait till the new stuff comes out and the price to drop on both. They are still going to be good cards. 580m if you want a 3d display now or in the future. If not, 6990m

The 6970M and 6990M are not far enough apart to justify the price difference. A 6xxx series card can be had much cheaper than $800. The 580M is going to cost an arm and a leg though.

gtx 600m is not coming anytime soon, even if it is coming it will be a mainstream entry first, then extreme editions, I really went all out into this research before buying this laptop, gtx 600m won't be out before Q2 2012, however a lot of people are saying we may see an amd 7750m around january (will be of similar performance with 6990m but better power consumption)..

the rumour mill says ati could be ready before xmas FOR ITS 7XXX gpus, nvidia in march. ati will most likely releases its desktop mid range and its notebook gpus and then its high end gpus around feb/march. they call these pipecleaners, test out the fab process. the reality though, is no one knows.

Just get a 6970M. It is more powerful than your 460M, but doesn't cost as much as a 6990M. Sell the card when the 7xxx GPUs come out and are confirmed (or not) working.
