I'm leery about the soft touch shell on the R3, but what seems really insane is the soft touch palm rest, as I figure (much like my Droid X) it will look horrible pretty quickly.

So, R3 owners that actually rest their palms on the palm rest, how does it look?

I actually have that and use it on my M15x. I imagine it would help, although I'm not wild about having that under my palms and having to make sure it doesn't shift all the time.

I'm also going to be in situations where I'll need to use the touch pad.

Mine is holding up just fine, you can't be rough with it just like with any other finish but as long as you wipe it down ocasionally to prevent any marks from your hands it holds up just fine. I recommend wiping it down about once a month with a lightly damp cloth, and a dry cloth about once a week.

Had my R3 for about 2 months. Softtouch is fine. Can easily get fingerprints and such when hands are oily but still good.

I can say the same as Joey. Had mine for 3 months, and I have 0 scratches... no problem with palm rest. I used a special cleaner used to clean proyector lens to clean the screen, and it looks better than the first day i got it.

Mine is still looking great, oily hands attract marks, but they wipe off easily with a microfiber cloth!

Actually I am surprised at how many people have dirty laptops. I wipe mine daily with a tissue and once a week with commercial LCD cleaner. My laptops are always super clean. With my clients at work, you need to impress and you can't do that when your screen is covered in fingerprints and the keyboard filled with breadcrumbs ;)
