Hey I was wondering if a 90W adapter will work with my M17x R4.
This one is on a deal and it ends soon, if it works i will buy this:
Targus 90W AC Laptop Charger with USB Charger and 7 Interchangeable Tips

The thing is im in college and its a bothering to carry that big brick with me on campus.
Since I wont be playing games in my classes, I wanted to carry the 90W since its small and I can use it if I run out of juice.

Like I said... I only play games when im home so I do not need to carry such a big adapter.
Im an Engineering student and I really need my PC everywhere I go !

Tell me if this will work, if not please suggest something which I can do to feel less stress when carrying the M17x.
btw i also have a really good bag but still its too damn heavy and big ! :(

    Thank You

What bag you have? I put my m17x, charger, calc book, binder, plus external HD and stuff in my everki beacon and I can carry it around for quite a while.

The battery should last upwards of 6 hours. I take mine to work everyday with no power adapter and use it all day with no issues.

Nope, 90W is insufficient. Your 7970M has a TDP of 100W and the CPU is a 45W TDP. Add in your LCD, HDD etc and you'll be well over the 90W limit.

It could work, if you turn off your graphics, and park 2 of 3 cores permantly, but not sure if it will recognise an 90watt adapter, could make it work with some soldering skills tho, but thats a lot of work, and probably not worth the hassle

I have Swiss Gear Pegasus. But my campus is damn big and I gotta walk a lot with it...... its ok for sometime but i get tired too easily

    Are you KIDDING ME !
    6 hours with M17x ?
i get a max of 3.5, what settings you use ?

so is there a way i can switch off my ATI GPU completely and use the integrated instead ?

how do turn off my graphics completely ?

You are asking the right questions, you have to turn off the 7970m completely. I don't have ATI so I can't help there. With Optimus it is automatic if no games are running the GPU draws no power. I just set my battery profile to everything having power saving, brightness at like 3 bars (which seems plenty bright to me), and the GPU is always off. I commonly get upwards of 6 hours using wireless and doing pretty standard work tasks.

Actually I get around 4 hours max but not even near 6 !
With ATI it is also possible to do something like optimus, but the thing is I dont want it to run at all. Since im pretty sure the IGP Intel HD4000 Graphics can handle almost everything other than GPU intensive games.

I think fn+f7 and a restart should do that.

I personally use a bike to get around campus. I'm 5ft 6 so the M17x + notes is way too heavy for me to walk. That is one solution for you. I think Slappa has a new carry on w/ wheel coming out: The Jedi Mind Trix (?). It has plenty of space and it is said to fit a 18" laptop in with tons of space left. I've seen people running around campus with wheeled bags quite a lot. So just a few things for you to consider.

90W could work but Enduro is not that good. You could Fn + F7 to turn HD4000 off but I don't think you can use the same thing to turn 7970M off. And I really doubt the 90W would be significantly less heavy than the current charger.

How about investing in one of those little 10inch netbooks for 150-300 bones, very portable and will accomplish all college required tasks...
