Did you verify that the setting actually took effect?

    Because mine never did.

Yeah Intel tool is showing either 11 or 10CL but heard a weird beep when trying to boot to 9CL and that messed up my default values. Somehow the core current limit was set to like 30A and so my max CPU speed got capped at 2Ghz.

Probably going to need more voltage on the RAM.

Ah thanks. Still quite weird to me that it dropped from 815 to 700 with adding better RAM. Going to swap back and see what happened.

Has anyone ever tried 'Mac' RAM in their Alien? I've seen people say that RAM is RAM and as long as the main details are the same then it will work but others saying that it may not work. I'd like to know if anyone has actually tried it successfully. I may be able to get a good deal on some Crucial 1866 DDR3L ram but it's listed as 'Mac' RAM on the Crucial website.

Apple has been Intel x86 based for a while and RAM (matching voltage, dimensions & generation) will work across many platforms.

BTW I am a dummy, Slot 1+3 are Channel A and Slot 2+4 are Channel B. I just went from dual channel to single due to bad population.

So seems the R4 cannot do 2133mhz dual channel. Single channel fine, attempting dual it fails POST even max voltage and CL12. Settled for 10-11-12 timing @ 1866Mhz dual channel. XTU popped up to 847 (for whatever that is worth) & firestrike really close to 12.9k

Depends on the cpu really. Has to be a better cut cpu for it to work well let alone overclocking system ram.

Probably need a decent design of the mobo too. I searched all the old threads and seems M18x can do the 2133mhz same CPU

Good day everyone, instead of starting I new thread I thought I would add to this one. I'll get straight to the point: I think there are some things that could be improved in my system from the bios starting with Sata operations tab.
Correct me if I say anything stupid: Apparently when I bought this laptop 6 years ago I bought the configuration that used the msata as a cache device for the (now dead) 750GB HDD. Since I have an SSD now I don't need the msata to remain a cache device (right?), is there a way to use it as a normal drive? And since my boot drive (the SSD) is not set as raid shouldn't I switch from RAID to AHCI in the Sata operations tab?
I've included some screenshots from my bios and boot setup for reference

You should just have to format the msata and then it can be used as an additional drive. Cache drives are usually pretty small though. The broken 17 I just bought had a 512gb msata which was being used as the main OS drive.
Now that you've disabled the msata as a cache can you see it as a separate drive in Windows? Tty typing diskmgmt.msc in your windows explorer search bar.

Thank you for the help! I think I will wait a bit to do that, right now I'm very busy and as you said the msata isn't that big to make a difference I'll be buying an normal SSD to replace the secondary HDD just because it's dying.

Get the SSD size you want, but before you reinstall you OS, make sure you set SATA to AHCI so you can use the MSATA SSD by itself, according to the screenshots, its 64GB which is nothing to scoff at, but I wouldn't use it for anything other than OS or indie titles.

Well I was planning to use it to store other software (like games), when it comes to speed in loading the OS it should be the same as the ssd I'm already using in the sata slot as far as I've seen, so the OS would remain on the 840EVO I've already installed years ago

I was trying to update GPU drivers, as I've done many times already, but now I'm getting this error even if I try to install old drivers, any help? (sorry if it's partly in italian)

EDIT: fixed it, it seems a windows update was creating problems

yes the procedure was correct, but apparently I had a windows update that was preventing the installation in the background, I had updated the PC earlier but it either didn't do it or there was another update. Once I updated everything worked as usual.
I was pretty sure that it was some windows problem because it wouldn't let me install my previous drivers that I knew for a fact were working.

Guys I need your help once again! Today I was using my computer as usual, then I went to lunch and left it on (nothing running in the background), came back a few hours later and I see that my computer has restarted and now there are this red lines moving everywhere on screen and it gives a graphics card error. I have tried uninstalling the drivers and installing some old ones but nothing works, does some one know what is going on?

EDIT: I’ve tried resitting the GPU and now I get a black screen even if I connect it to an external display
EDIT2: No more black screen but the problem remains the same booting into windows requires several minutes

Would hate to be the bearer of bad news but that looks like the GPU is on its way out...if you have a spare GPU you could check and know for sure.

Do you normally monitor your temps? Has it been running hot?

If it is indeed the GPU you could explore baking it, there are a few guides here on NBR, perhaps you will be one of the lucky few who have been able to eek out another 3-6 months of life out of the GPU that way...either way be sure to accept the risks of that process before giving it a go :)

I monitor temperatures and they were good; today I left my laptop with just a pdf open for a couple of hours max, and I find it in this state. Last time I’ve played a game or done any graphic intensive tasks it was 24 hours ago and temps were fine.

the problem is that even if I get it working with the 770M now, I will need a new laptop ASAP.

UPDATE. I'm back with the 770M and the screen is back to normal, unfortunately, while this card will keep this pc running for time being, I need more power than this for future projects so I will have to change laptop next month, something I wanted to avoid this year but it is what it is. I'm aiming for the Area-51M. Thanks everyone once again for the help.

Would be willing to sell mine if interested, I'll just tdp mod it back within spec so it would be smooth sailing.

Also tomorrow will be creating some listings for the cpu / ram / chassis / fans etc etc.

Thanks but I won’t be buying a new GPU for this laptop. I need a better CPU for my future projects and unfortunately the i7-4930 wouldn’t cut it either. I cannot build a desktop as I travel a lot. I’ll be choosing my next one very carefully maybe I’ll ask around in the forum.

Im thinking the same...this alienware is just getting too expensive to upgrade...cheaper and better performance to buy a newer model.

I hate the new slim laptops though...give me a big fat girl any time ;)
