I think you should first check your system, check and test with the latest Bios revision you will get, check the drivers performance and then start to make "fix", dont fix which isn't broken; after the check, if your card drivers (i see you gonna get single card) look for the most stable release, im using now the 10.6 ccc, this runs without problems on my machine with bios A05, there is an update for A06 but i will pass it, is focused on XF systems and some people are having troubles during installation, so, go for the stable.

If you are thinking about to make a fresh install, which i did there are two guides for driver installations, i followed both, this one and this; both are a little different from each other, but i personally have tested the first way and i got some problems, so, i did a merge and i don't got any trouble.

Enjoy your machine, this just rocks . .

Install all your power hungry software and test. Look out for any unusual events etc.

    Calibrate your RGB screen- http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/467162-rgb-led-calibrating-m17x-r2-2.html

Bios, Vbios & driver updates are 'optional'. I find that its best to leave the system as it is as long as your softwares work fine. But if you are one of those tinkerers who like to squeeze every ounce of performance from your system, good luck & have fun!
