I had a G73-Jh, and that had some good sound. My M17x R3 is a cheap comparison to the Asus. And if you're really an audio buff, then go for Bose. Costly...yes, Worth it? YES!! :)

well it sounds okay not the best ive ever heard by far just all i could afford at the time now its upgrade time! all i know is that a headset can be the most expensive in the world but if your sound card is trash then whats the point

Very true and the sound card on the Alienware's is the absolute suck. I purchased an external sound card because I loathe the onboard. Also, I needed something to plug my HPA2's in to because they are 5.1, and my UDAC-2 was only stereo. I bought the Soundblaster X-FI surround 5.1 PRO. For all of the connectivity 5.1, optical out, etc. If you are just using stereo I would definitely recommend the UDAC-2 awesome little DAC. If you want a sound card I would recommend the Sound Blaster. For Headsets I would definitely recommend the Turtle Beach HPA2's True 5.1 surround and are phenomenal at their job for Gaming and Movies. For music I use my Modded Audio Technica AD-700's with Dual cable entry mod, rewired with premium silver audio cable, 90 degree SwitchCraft plug, and ViaBlue splitter.

Yeah, the sound card isn't bad. It's powered by Klipsch, but i mean the speakers sucked. Sorry if i confused you, and yeah, i'd go for the Bose headset. They are pretty costly, but have great noise cancellation, and they have good treble and bass.

Definitely not alone bud! :D I couldn't really find an all around great headset for everything I wanted so I got something for music and something for everything else. Gotta say though the AD-700's did not sound that great when I first bought them then after the mods I had done complete 180. They sound absolutely Amazing now! Also, if you really want the best sound BOSE is not the way to go sorry Toledano.

    EDIT:

Here are pics of my AD-700's

No sweat, you have some pretty good headsets, but Bose does have great treble for such a small headset.

Yeah, $$ is hard to get nowadays, and have you heard of Astros? They're pretty nice and are pretty affordable.

You can get the HPA2's for around $70 and the Soundblaster for $60.

Around $130 for the pair. Plus you can always get one at time. ;)

Also, Astro does make ok headsets, but def not worth the 200+ they charge for them.

    Which headset?
No, the HPA2's do not have active noise cancelling neither do the AD-700's.

Also, just wanted to add that the HPA2's can do music pretty darn good just not as well as the AD's. The bass compared to the HPA2's is not as pronounced which has head shaking bass literally.

    What was that acronym?

    Buy
    Other
    Sound
    Equipment

Not all their stuff is junk (some definitely is), but it's all quite overpriced compared to other comparable or even superior options. I'd put Bose and Monster Cable firmly in the same category, with an edge in sleaziness to Monster.

The AD's I use primarily for music and I use my HPA2's for gaming and movies. I am using my HPA2's for music as we speak and they are not that bad at all. Go for the HPA2's. It's like this

    HPA2's

    Music 7/10
    Movies 10/10 Blu-rays are amazing
Gaming 10/10 I get accused of hacking all the time! :)

The thing with the HPA2's is they don't handle stereo sources as well as a Stereo headset because you have 4 drivers(total 8 speakers) in each earcup each driver is set to produce each channel. 5.1 sources are fantastic though.

I'm curious about the audio difference between r3's internal sound card(which supports 5.1) and soundblaster X-fi surround 5.1 pro? anyone tried the difference? Is it worth buying the external sound card?

I'm not too happy with the sound card that came with my Alienware.

    TIP:

if you guys want a cheap but excellent sound solution...get these:

Newegg.com - Creative Sound Blaster Tactic 3D Alpha USB Connector Circumaural Headset

Includes a built-in USB X-FI sound card with THX trustudio. Its head and shoulders better than the dell audio...and you can't lose at this price point! The headphones are very good if you use them via USB (so you're using the X-FI). They sound a bit flat if you don't use them via usb
