I was just wondering about audio, it's output and such. Suddenly, I realized I didn't know if my laptop has a dedicated soundcard or not.
I wanted to know what a sound card is, what it's for and how it can change the experience of listening. Also, I do not know how to check my laptop for a soundcard.
Does having a sound card really boost the experience of one's music. Shed some light please.

The onboard is good enough for most users, some others use an external USB sound card.

The reason I'm asking is that I am planning to get a 7.1 gaming headset. From the reviews, it is clear that without a decent sound card, buying it is waste. Hence, my doubt here.
Is SoundBlaster 3D Recon i enough? -
Sound card should be fine, as long as the input for the headset allows for optical in you should have no worries (its a digital signal then). Otherwise it might be a simulated 7.1 output instead.
