I don't really know how to start this, but here it goes:

I've got an M17xR3. Among other things, I use it to play music for my dorm's floor and my alarm. (I started classes today)

Last night, before I went to bed, I was listening to music through my headphones. I unplugged them, turned my computer off, and went to bed. I set my alarm for 80% volume, which is what I always set it on.

Thank God for roommates. My speakers decided to cut out on me this morning.

I can plug in my headphones and they work fine, but my speakers are a no-go.

What's the name of the primary device for the internal speakers?

    Okay, here's what it's doing.

I'll be sitting here on my computer, just typing away or whatever and then this pops up:

It'll do it COMPLETELY randomly. It's really ed annoying, frankly.

Try plugging in a different set of headphones and unplug.

the problem is the music you are playing, it is trying to tell you something ;)
     :)

did you try clicking on rear speakers, or uncheck jack monitor?

One last thing, on my R2 the jack seems like not a tight fit and moving the cord does a quick disconnect and reconnect

Motherboard issue or software we dont know..but yours is among many that has cropped up since April. Unaddressed by Dellienware. I dont remember the thread. But they have combined M18x n M17x thread for this purpose. Usually this issue starts only after you have plugged into the option audio out put. One or 2 of them mentioned after using head phones. Until today nobody is describing anything consistently about the issue. Every who comes up with the problem explains in a dodgy manner. And then those who have had motherboards replaced claim it is resolved. But then again we are not told if after the motherboard swap is done the issue is completely eliminated. Some have had repeated issues. I dont know if people just stopped using the jacks or the jacks were rectified to be usable without causing the glitch.

Lil Wayne aside (I had to listen to Carter IV, just for curiosity's sake)...

That thing pops up when the computer gets moved around.

If it's the motherboard, I'm going to get pants-on-head, fecal-matter-throwing angry.

You can turn off jack-sensing though, can't you? Also, are your speakers working afterall?

The speakers work. The computer just inexplicably decides to switch from speakers to headphones at times.
