Hello!
I am thinking of getting an i7 920xm perhaps due to cheaper price.
And I was wondering what are some stable/safe speed you guys got with either the 920 or the 940.
What are temperatures? Was there throttling when running prime95 + furmark??
And did you guys disable the turbo boost?? If you guys didnt, to what speed did turbo boost get??
I am really really curious as I am thinking about upgrading! Please share your experiences! Thank you in advance.

I keep mine @23x133 across the 4 cores( 3.0Ghz quad) and respectively 25 and 27 for dual and single core (3.33 & 3.6 Ghz) this is daily use config and temperatures don't pass 75 degrees mark under normal conditions, lower 80's under wprime load
edit: forgot to say, my tdp is 75W -

Was it not stable at 3.2ghz 4 cores?? Is your 920 ES model or OEM?
Thanks again. -

it is stable up to 3.65 Ghz across the 4 cores. this cpu's are monsters when it comes to overclock, but at that speed across the 4 cores temperatures get too high for a daily basis setup. Mine is a QS/ES even if it has the same code as an OEM cpu (SLBLW)
Also i'm keeping an eye at power consumption since i'm running dual 6970's -

Wow the 920xm is a true beast....
I am thinking about going 3.2ghz 4 cores. (I just like the number 3.2 for some reason...) Perhaps with 5870s tops, and not other hardcore gpus. Do you think it can handle the heat at this speed?? With/without turbo boost?
Thank you for your input again! -
yeah, i run 25x133mhz ( 3,325Ghz) on 4 core and the heat is around 80 degrees in wprime and some game, it has no problem!

My other question..
Have you tried running prime95 + Furmark simultaneously to FULLY stress both cpu and gpu?? In this case, do you remember temps for each of the parts (also since you got 5870s which I am interested)? Did it ever throttle??
Have u tried to stress both parts after ocing cpu AND gpu?? any throttling then??? how were the temp?
Please let me know! Thank you again. -
I don't have furmark installing, but I loop 3D Mark Vantage some time and my cpu's peak temps are under 90° , my 5870Ms are around 80°, both are full load under Vantage I think, my setup to run it is 27/27/26/25 to 920xm and 810/1150 to 5870Ms

Wow the cpu does run pretty darn hot! Do you know to what voltage u set it up to??
Also, is that the max u can oc on 5870s for stability and heat?? -
And with 5870M, I could raise to 900/1200 for vantage, but it's with one card alone, my slave card couldn't pass 850 on its core, the temps for 840/1200 was ok, under 85° for both, but I did repaste it and retention mod as well

That is good oc for the gpu card. Wow.. I did not know i7 920xm was THAT good.... wow......
so i guess for the 5870, the oc really depends on individual card? -
Yep all GPU and CPUs OC differently and it depends on the individual card. However the GPUs seem to have a more wider difference in how much they can OC in terms of stability. For mine i am able to run games comfortable at 850mhz core and 1250mhz mem.
As for when I do benchmarking I can run both my GPUs at 890 or 900mhz and 1290mhz mem.
Mine are original voltage as well for OC.
Good luck with your purchase and upgrade!
Cheers. -

Thank you for the reply. That is a really nice oc for your gpu.
I wonder how much potential there is when we increase voltage for cpu and gpu... using that mod to also improve cooling...
I was wondering, is there any high performance fan we can use instead of the stock ones? -
@Dellienware: I don't think there is any custom fan for cpu,gpu in R2 yet, but if you don't plan to push it so hard, stock fan and heatsink can handle the heat even with 6970/6990. -
Yup on standard original voltage my max that I could OC my 5870s were 890mhz/900mhz core clock and 1290mhz memory clock. However they still didn't get me into the top 5 on the M17x benchmark leaderboard LOL!
Especially since a lot of peeps have the 6970s in their systems now. I need a pair of them to start competing!
I did however scrape in on the more CPU bound 3d mark 06 top 5.

I have a heap of benchmark runs starting at page 86 and going back quite a few pages from there. That was when I caught the benchmark bug lol!

I wish my card could be pushed like you man, thank you for post your result!

I will definitely get the i7 920xm first then try to pick up 5870s. the latter generation is much out of my budget so
im currently having major issues out of the box. They suggested me a system exchange or a repair (not so promising...) but i still havent had the chance to call them up. Seems like the R2 is really really upgradeable + i7 920xm when OCed right isnt that bad compared with the sandy bridges too so..
My last question about the graphics is, i thought that the R2 only supports up to 150w for both gpu right?? so like we wont be able to fit in 580m sli cause that two gpu uses total of 200w and basically the bios and psu dont support it? -
Good luck with your system too! -

I guess by the time 6970s are not high performing, we would probably have ivy bridge, hence refresh on m18x with new gpus.
I would like to keep my R2 instead of getting M18x as system exchange because although 18x has bit better add on like usb 3.0 and hdmi in and all, I still like the R2's design much more and 18x's alien eyes on the lid do NOT glow!
im thinking that by the time 6970s are not performing well, the i7 920xm oced would need to be changed as well. I will post with my results soon. -
I think the 920xm/6970/6990 combo will be good for a few more years for gaming. Plus you can always throw in a usb 3.0 express card
