    Hello guys,

Today, I have encountered a strange problem on my Alienware m17x-r4 (AMD 7970M gfx)
While I was playing Hearthstone, the screen suddenly went weird.
As a matter of fact, lots of strange green and purple dots/lines appeared ( http://i.imgur.com/eNQk7pb.jpg )
I then proceeded to plugging my alienware laptop on an external monitor using an HDMI cable.
The display on the external monitor was perfect.
I then proceeded in plugging my PS3 and another laptop on my alienware laptop. Both the PS3 and the other laptop were perfectly displayed on my
alienware laptop. I also tried to install/uninstall various versions of AMD drivers, did a full anti-virus and malware scan. Nothing helped.

I hope you guys can help me pinpoint the origin of the problem.

    Thanks for reading me.

Must be a problem with the part of the GPU which drives the internal display. When you use the HDMI in it uses the intel card I believe.
If you remove the AMD GPU and just run it on the intel one does the problem go away?

    Hey, thanks for your answer!

I already tried to disable the AMD 7970M and only work with the Intel HD4000 (not physically removing the AMD, but uninstall and disabling it), but nothing has changed. Furthermore, the HDMI IN works with the AMD 7970M and not with integrated one (as far I have researched on the web).

Usually this is caused when the VRAM on the graphics cards start to go out. Or it could be a display malfunction however you proved it wasn't by plugging a ps3 into it. However. Do you use enduro? Also what is weird if it was graphics related it would show up on the external monitor as well.. Unless it is the intel hd graphics giving you problems.

    Hey Hackintoshihope,
    thanks for your answer!

Well, I do not use Enduro. I only use the dedicated GFX while the integrated intel hd is deactivated.
When I switch to the intel hd, the display gives me another range of strange colors. More purplish.
Also, I have done both Alien Autopsy and the boot-up diagnostic tests, which given me 0 errors (0 vram error, 0 lcd error..)

Have you tested it on an external monitor?

    Hi guys,

local support (Dell partners, not Dell itself) says it's a screen problem and needs to be replaced.
It's strange because I tried my PS3 on my alienware and the screen looks fine.
I don't really trust them because they are not used to alienware computers and I don't think they are really reliable.
Anyway, how can I confirm this is really a screen problem? And how much does a screen replacement from Dell cost?
I'm afraid to order a screen replacement and it would have been an inverter problem or something else.

    Thanks!

Try reseating the LVDS connector. This does seem like an odd problem
