So yesterday my laptop was taken appart for a new processor, blurry and wireless card. Ever since then, if I keep it on for like an hour or so and go to shut it down, the screen turns off but the lights and comp itself stay on. I have to hold the power button down for a complete shut down.

If it stays on for like 10 min, then shut down, I have no issues.

Any ideas on what it could be?

Have you done a drive sweeper and clean install of additional new drivers? Could be due to a driver conflict.

Yeah, I think you may be right on this. I didn't uninstall the old Dell wireless card or removed its driver before putting in the Intel Wireless card in...

I didn't remove and unsinstall the old driver for the DVD drive either >.< I just realized that...

Any ideas on how to find/remove those old drivers?

driver sweeper to remove them, then use Ccleaner to finish the job.

I was having the very same issue to where I would go to shutdown, the screen would go black but the computer would just sit there and not finish
shutting down. These are some of the problems noted with the 5870 adapters. There is a sub-forum on the beta 8.763 video drivers and new
vbios combination being discussed there. These beta drivers are from Dell and there are links to the new vbios also discussed in the sub-forum. This new vbios was released by Brian who works for Dell, so it is official and safe to do if you follow the directions given in the discussion thread. If you decide to update your vbios on your 5870s, please read through the thread
completely and understand what you are doing before flashing your video cards. If it is done wrong, you will brick your 5870s. But it is not hard if you
follow the directions step-by-step. I flashed my 5870s and installed the beta 8.763 drivers from Dell and my problems went away. Another thing that you will gain by doing this is you will be able to run the stock 10.8 drivers from ATI and newer drivers as they become available. This may not be your issue, but it will improve the operation of your 5870 adapters.

the issue with it not shutting down all the way isnt only related to the R2's with 5870 cards, this has been an issue since febuary when the R2 was released.

I am sure that you are correct about that. I was not saying that this problem only applied to 5870s, all I was saying is that for some people with 5870s this action corrected this problem. I also noted in my post that this may not be the issue causing the problem, but only a posibility. It may have more to do with being able to run newer drivers after the vbios update. So if the problem is with the vbios, then yes it could also cause problems with 4870s displaying the same problem. I believe that Brian said something about working on a new vbios update for the 4870s also.

the issue, that most have had with this, were bios issues that had nothing to do with the GPU at all.

I respecfully disagree with that statement. I have followed the beta 8.763 ATI sub-forum from the very start and read ever post. There are post in the this sub-forum that describe this very issue. Some of the problems also involved not waking from sleep mode properly. I had the very issue that the original poster had that repeated itself several times before I update my vbios and started using the beta 8.763 drivers posted by Dell. I did nothing else but those actions. I did not change the bios or remove or install any new software-nothing. Now I am not saying that the bios cannot cause a similar problem, as far as that goes I am sure that there could be many things that could cause this. But to say that GPU have nothing to do with this problem, I respecfully disagree with that statement, but you are entitled to your beliefs. In an case, what I recommended will do nothing but improve the 5870s performance and stability.

we are most likely recalling two different instances of the same issue. the beta driver has not a thing to do with the issue im referring to, but i haven't read a lick of the beta driver thread since it doesn't apply to my machine. so sorry for the derail.

Well, I'm reformatting. I was going to have to eventually since I have the win 7 pro. Going from home premium to pro is good anyway lol. Let's hope the reformat solves the issue.

Ok, did the reformat, problem is still there. Weird thing is I never had this issue prior to doing the upgrades.

Should I re-flash the system BIOS? I am thinking yes...

If flashing the system BIOS doesn't fix the problem, then it MUST be the vbios and GPUs that are causing the hang/issue...
