    Hi guys,

My 17 is acting strangely when I close the lid. The screen turns off and refuses to come back on for anything until I hold down the power button and restart the laptop. The power settings are set to 'do nothing', and even when I set it to 'sleep' when closing the lid, the same thing happens (the laptop does not go to sleep). It is almost like the display adapter just completely shuts off... Has anyone else experienced this? For some reason I suspect it is to do with the 3D bundle, but that's just a hunch, any input is appreciated!

Hi, never heard of this exact issue although a black screen and no wake up is not uncommon. Have you see what happens with an external display connected?

I say, put the latest NV driver dell just released on it and call it in if nobody has any better ideas?

I will escalate the case, we may come up with something about this. If we get any responses from engineering I will create a new thread. Sorry about the inconvenience.

I've had this issue with msi afterburner installed. After not allowing it to monitor the gpu or anything to do with the gpu. Just fps. The problem vanished. Now I just use HWInfo. Don't know if this helps. Because I think the issue I was having was optimus related.

This makes a lot of sense. It seems like it is shutting down the display when on the dGPU and then trying to wake it up on the iGPU - and the 120hz guys do not have an iGPU.

Afterburner could have been holding the NV card so it fails in the same way - just an idea after reading your post?

Exactly what I figured. But I thought I'd post it for other users.

I hadn't seen the sleep mode thread, it definitely strikes me as similar, my system won't even go into sleep mode when I check sleep after closing the lid. That definitely makes sense about afterburner, I don't have afterburner installed but I have similar programs that could be emulating the same set of circumstances. I'll have a play around :D
Thanks for escalating Luis, much appreciated.

Doubt you will find anything. On the 120hz model the iGPU is not available and it looks like this is part of the equation.

Does it sleep OK and recover if you select it from the start menu?

Hopefully dell will be able to figure it out :)

Wow, this seems to be a common trend with laptops (Dell) in my experience. My M1530 I used to use wouldn't resume from sleep, and my M17xR3 that I have now won't resume from sleep either - just a black screen. Doesn't bother me now that I have an SSD, as I just turn it on & off & it boots real quick, but ideally I'd like the sleep to work. Seems like such a common problem!

It does yeah, and the problem with actually going to sleep seems to be very temperamental; I was unable to replicate it after typing that post, it went to sleep as it should when I shut the lid straight after. Still having the black screen issue though, so yeah, basically hoping Dell find something and fix it :p It's not THAT big a problem, but if I'm working and have a lot of PDFs/PP slides/Word docs open in specific places and I accidentally forget and close the lid when I go do something else, it's pretty annoying to have to restart my system and reopen everything. Just got to kick the habit of shutting the lid for now I guess!

I have the same problem. Mine is a 3d. I don't have much installed that didn't come with it. I find it very annoying and would like to get a resolution for this problem.
