For the last few weeks my computer keeps becoming unresponsive for no apparent reason. I'll be surfing the internet just fine but then some websites will open and some wont. For whatever reason I cant get the sound mixer to come up (it's running in task manager but not on the screen and closing it using the task manager still doesn't have it come up on the screen when I try to open it again). If I open some programs for example word, notepad or anything it says unresponsive and needs to be forced closed by task manager. So at that point basically it's all unresponsive, but for some reason I can still use the mouse and kind of the internet browser. If I then go to restart the computer it locks up on the windows logging off screen and a hard reset is required. When it restarts (after saying it was shutdown improperly) everything is back to normal.
I thought maybe it was chrome internet browser so I tried firefox and IE and it still does it. It happens completely sporadically some times after just a day or sometimes five days. I also thought maybe it was flash because I'm getting a lot of the grey exclamation marks but I've updated that without issue.
There are no errors that come up on the screen when it happens or any listed in the logs. So I'm at a loss. A google search doesnt seem to have results mostly because as a group the problems are so random. Could it be the ram or hard drive?
It's a alienware m17xr3 with windows 7 sp 1, 8 gb or ram, intel i7-2860QM, and GTX 580M. I'm going to try some of dell's troubleshooting tools, but I'm not sure where to start because there are so many of them.
Any ideas are welcome.

Not a Bad idea, finding and troubleshooting the issue may take longer than that.
You could look at the event viewer for any potential issues if you feel like it. -
Reinstall Windows.. Seems to be typical signs of old windows installation...
Strangly unresponsive laptop
