    Hi guys

I managed to get the windows7 dvd stuck in the drive bay as i tried to do a clean w7 install. I recently changed a hdd and saw it as an opportunity to upgrade from vista. I ran the disks in a stripe config so I lost all the data anyway.

But now im properly screwed, the stupid touch strip doesent respond so i cant eject the dvd!

Is there a function during boot that can force the dvd-drive to eject or do i have to tear the whole machine apart?

This happend, with on of my slot load dvd drives. A technician had to come out and replace the drive. the only way to get the disc out was to tear the old drive apart.

In my case though it was the drive that was jammed not a malfunction of the touch strip. Did you try to eject the disc from my computer in windows?

Is the disc in the drive and working? or is it just in the drive and not even reading when you boot. Did you complete the install of W7?

As far as I remember there is no Manual eject button for Slot loading dvd drives.

Windows is gone, I had two drives in raid 0, and when i change one of them with a new blank one, ALL data is lost, poof, no more windows.

The drive itself is working, but the w7 dvd is unreadable, i have no OS and the touch strip does not work.

And thus why i really do hate slot load drives...

I think the only way to get the disc out is a tear down of the drive itself... though someone might be able to tell you a way to get some thin tweezers into the drive (not sure if that works though)

Ya i was going to suggest this as well. get a windows 7 iso and or any windows that will work for that matter. load it to a USB key or External drive and attempt to install windows. From there you can software eject the dvd drive. if that doesn't work then you'll have to tear it down and order a new drive because you can't get the disc out without damaging the drive. (as far as I know).

Did you try to eject while at POST or in the BIOS? I'm pretty sure that the eject button on the hinge cover will work there. I can double check it tomorrow at work when I'm in front of a system...

I have tried ejecting at post and in bios, but there is no response.

My attempts to boot from a usb as been unsuccessful too. I set usb at #1 in the boot sequence, but im not sure if i copied the files from the dvd correctly.

Did you format the USB drive as a boot disc?

It takes a 4GB partition formatted correctly to be able to actually load an OS from the USB drive

I formatted the stick as a NTFS bootable disk, and then i copied the entire data from the vista dvd that came with the machine onto the drive afterwards.

Thats my problem though, i have no OS, so I cant run any programs :(

And there is actually a metal pin inside the slot that is physically blocking the dvd from coming out. Thanks for the tip though.

As of now I have called dell and they are sending a tech with an external dvd drive and solving the problem the way user _XIII_ did.
