So, it seems that the M17x R3 doesn't have a built-in subwoofer. When I'm using it on my desk at home, is there any way to connect a subwoofer to provide that low bass kick when watching movies or gaming?

And if there is, can anyone make recommendations on a sub? :)

If you are going to plug somthing in, why jsut plug in a sub and not a whole speaker system.....there are too many to list that include a sub.

I dont think the r3 has another other than optical, 2 headphone and a mic jack....so I dont think you can just hook up sub alone. I bought a wireless usb headset to use with mine, I also have the optical jack for my 7.1 home theatre system (never going to be used with this ).

I thought about it some more, and I guess there is nothing to be gained by plugging in a sub on its own. May as well connect it to a 2.1 or 5.1 speaker system and be done.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a kick 2.1 speaker system that would do the job?

I would suggest the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 over the Z5500's for PC speakers. My roommate has the Z5500's, and even though they are loud, the midrange is somewhat recessed, and thus isn't that good for listening to music. And plus, you will need to find space on your desk to place those 5 speakers for the Z5500.

I would say the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 is the best PC speaker system at the moment, as it's great for everything from music to movies and gaming. It might not look as flashy as the Z5500, but the sound is incredibly crisp and accurate. The subwoofer doesn't disappoint either. This system gets loud without becoming distorted, and it can easily fill an entire living room, even though it's a 2.1 system. You can really feel the vibrations when it gets going.
