I thought replacing my GTX 580M with an AMD 6990M would easily fix the problem for my unreconized graphics card. And its From the" EXACT" same computer M17xR3 and rarely been used. But turns out, There a problem with downloading the AMD drivers with my computer. And of course... dell don't make "those" parts anymore because the R4 is coming out .. Now I'm close to being fed up with this this computer as It still is working as I typing on it now. I don't know much about upgrading it since its going to give me problems again not to metion is the newer cards is 3.0 compatable the set itself or just sell this laptop, build a desktop instead and get a regular laptop. If it comes to that well.. I had a good run with this computer and I've learned my lesson . No warranty of course so that's out of the question

Are you able to buy another GPU? I think you should stop putting time, energy and money into the 6990M and buy a GTX 680M or 780M. It was a bad idea to go for an AMD card.

Sad story man, glad I don't have to deal with Dell anymore.

Also did you download the drivers before installing the new graphics card and it still didn't work?

For this R3 not a chance only a few used and refurbished cards. I've actually asked the dell representative if It was possible to upgrade my card to a Nvidia 680M but she said It's not possible because of the heat sink placement (I don't think that is true based off want I've seen on the forums).

    Yeah I did.
Well this stuff happens (I'm still surprised that graphics cards are rare to find new after a year or so). .. probably should've extended the warranty on my part or sent it right when It had problems but that was after warranty :(.

Yep, you can. People are putting the 680M in the M15x, you can definitely upgrade to a 680M or 780M. Don't listen to level 1 Dell representatives, most of them have no idea what they are talking about.

Rodee, i also had awful experiences with Dell reps and service centres over here, documented in this thread.

The best way is to find the best card you can afford, buy it from somebody reputable on this forum or on eBay, and do it yourself. Then you'll know for sure its a good job. If you need help with any step of the way everybody is here to help you. Definitely dont give up on your whole system yet!

This is exactly what happen to me initially.

It could be your motherboard or more specifically the PCI connection on your MOBO. Do you have a friend in who's system you could test out the GFX cards? That way you'll know if its actually the MOBO or the GFX.

+1 to upgrading to A12 BIOS.
