I've been searching the forum and haven't found a problem quite like mine. Sorry if this has been answered.

I recently bought an m17 & did a full reinstall of Windows 7. When I go into the bios to enable the discrete card, after the windows login screen I just get a backlit black screen and cursor.

I'm a newcomer to this tech, can anyone help?

ah. I imagine this isn't to do with your graphics but might be something wrong with your startup.

try going into task manager at that black screen (ctrl+alt+del) and running a new task.

type in explorer.exe press enter and then see if your desktop appears.

If the discrete graphics is enabled, can you go on safe mode?

I solved it. I t was a driver problem, had to edit the rfl files on the nvidia drivers. Now do update to the newest drivers, as I'm getting stutter in Starcraft 2 and BF3 on medium settings.
