Is there anyway I could call up Dell and ask them to switch my GPU from the 460m to either the 6990m or the 580m? I would like that to happen seeing as I've only had my system for about two months..

Give them a call, you'll most likely have to pay a difference!

Not likely, 2 months in the tech world is a long time. Worth a try though. Let us know how it goes.

Sell your system, take a little loss and buy a new one.

I'm pretty sure they'll just offer to sell you one outright, which you can then install yourself.

The rep said that I had to call back in a week when they have the GPU for actual upgrade. Currently he said the GPU's are built in and they are not getting the actual GPU's seperate from the motherboards until next week. So I'll call in next week and ask how much it would cost to buy.

wow, I'm just looking at all you specs. Really nice CPUs...but GTX 460m is kinda lol. I feel Alienware was trying to gimp buyers in tihnking GTX 460m was an super fast card able to play games super well in 3D. Wait for driver updates for both GTX 580m and 6990m, they will both be able to do 3D later.

I didn't get this laptop for gaming per say since I just built my core i7 desktop with a GTX 580. However I picked this over different models for the 3d as well as the ability to upgrade the graphics card later on.

The same for my inspiron 9300. I upgraded the graphics card and flashed the bios to make it a XPS 1710 :) The system still works till this day and only had minor issues.

I've had mine for about a month now and I wish I would have had the 6990m option as well..I'll be keeping an eye on this thread as I may do the same thing. I'm half tempted to give the Killer N wireless card a go too. That was one thing I was wishing it had an option for when I had initially placed my order.

Hey I had the same problem, if you would like to just upgrade to 6970m, not as good as 6990m but it is up there better than 460m for sure, the difference i am paying is about 387... 412 with tax, so for 6990 you'll be paying maybe 500+ and keep in mind, when they say some ridiculous price tell them. You Want to trade in your OLD 460M practically brand new, and WANT TO UPGRADE... keyword UPGRADE.. and they should send you the video card or have tech come with it and install or send it have you install it and have you mail the 460m back... THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I AM DOING WITH 6970m... I HOPE THIS HELPS!!!! and that is exactly what he told me for 6990m, 1 week wait for quote because of that reason.

Wait. Why are people asking for the part number for the 6990m? Can we order it from Dell? Also, if my gpu were to happen to "die," could I get it warrantied out for a 6990m (of course I'd pay some kinda difference), or is my only option always another 6970m?

I have been having artifacting issues. I'm not sure if its the game or what but i can't get it fixed and I'm wondering if they'd send me a replacement 6990 or if I'd have to send the whole laptop back. I already sent it back once, I'd hate to have to do it again. If i call is there someone certain I should call? Maybe the Dell rep who I went through when I ordered it? I wasn't terribly fond of him, couldn't understand half of what he said.

Talked to Dell today and got the artifacting issue resolved. I re-installed the video driver, but this time i used a program to remove all the remains of the previously installed driver and it works great now. There were conflicting issues between the remains of the old driver and the new driver.

I also asked about getting an upgraded video card and he said they aren't in stock yet, but it would not be a problem to upgrade when they become available. I am at 26 days with this laptop and the cutoff for returns is 21 so that rules out that idea... I will probably call back in a week or so and see if they have any 6990's in stock and what it would cost to do an upgrade.

I'm curious to see how things turn out for you. Keep us posted.

Okay so I called back and he said that those GPU's are still not available and I will have to call back at a later day to see if the GPU's are available.

But! He said that he would update me via email when they are and the pricing options.

tl;dr: GPU's not available yet, hopefully soon though. Will get updates via Email.

    I'll keep you people posted~

Sell your system and re-order. The card will cost like 700 dollars from Dell.

You can do much more with 700 dollar if you re-order.

Well at least thats what I would do.

    $700, for the 580M or 6990M?

That sounds way too high for an AMD chip.

    Clevo's preliminary 6990M price is under $500.

They do not have the cards in stock until the next week end, hopefully. I know someone and he told me that they are getting a shipment at the end of the week (if that is what the shipment will have). I am talking about US and Canada...

May I ask what games you're planning on using your laptop for? Unless you're hoping to squeeze another 5-10 fps out of Battlefield 3 on ultra, there really isn't any reason to not just wait for the 7000 series.

this. if you have a 6970 i cant see how the expense is worth it.

    unless you want 3d
