So I've been approved for a system replacement on my M17x-R1, and I will be sent an R2 very soon. The customer service rep I spoke with said I would be receiving a "full upgrade." What exactly does this mean, and which parts can I expect to see upgraded? Does this mean that R1 parts (video cards, monitor, etc) are not compatible with the R2, and I'll actually be getting some decent hardware upgrades? I certainly hope so! :D

means your are getting a R2 with same or better spec's. That means with out seeing what you have now, you didnt add them. You will get a I7 cpu, ATI GPU's in cross fire if your's has 2 already and any other parts equal or better than you have. If you post your current spec's could tell more. Good luck on your new upgrade. :D

+1 what he said. I had the following config in my R1:

    t9600 2.8
    4 gig ram
    1920x1200 lcd
    dual 280ms
    500gb hard drive

What I as my replacement was:

    i7 q720 1.6/2.8 turbo quad core
    dual 4870s
    dual 320gb hard drives
    1920x1200 RGB LED

    These are my specs:

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000 (2.0GHZ base)
    Generic PnP Monitor (1920x1200)
    x2 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M
    4 GB Ram @ 1333mHz
    500GB HDD

Nice! I really like the sound of getting the RGB LED screen and possibly an i7 processor.

Yeah, if you're getting an R2 (which appears to be all they hand out these days) you are getting an I7. Also, if you are getting an R2 and you have a 1920x1200 LCD, it'll be replaced by a 1920x1200 LED (there is no LCD 1920x1200 option on the R2 to my knowledge). Not sure what you'll get CPU wise, specs are pretty much up to the discretion of the techs who are trying to build a comparable system.

Didn't you get 5870's out of it after complaining 4870's didnt play some demo game well? Why don't you help him out?

I made a firm, coherent argument and the technician I spoke to was receptive. Besides, I don't know what he's -going- to get yet. I gave him the specs as they were initially sent to me. He might have a harder time making the same argument when his original system had 260s instead of 280s. The fact that I had the highest end video cards available for the R1 was a big part of my argument.

Why would they replace his 260 to 5870? 4870 makes more sense to me.

260's AND 280's are less powerful than the 4870's. If Byshop got 5870's, why shouldn't the OP.

That would be freakin' swell, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Any way to find out who approved the system exchange and speak with them directly?

I know the 2xx are less powerful, but it's well known they've been replacing 260's with 4870's and 280's with 5870's. Their so called like-to-like policy.

Yeah, see I got my 280s replaced with 4870s so when I called it didn't take a ton of convincing to get them to send me a pair of 5870s.

Obviously the 5870s are an upgrade from the 280s in both performance and DX11, but the 4870s were better in some ways and worse in others. It's not an apples to apples comparison, but I figured if they can't give me what I had before then what I got instead shouldn't be worse in any way. I actually offered to pay the difference for the 5870s, but they went ahead and sent them to me for no charge.

I don't have much hope in them slipping up and giving me 5870's for my 260m's, so I wonder if they'll let me customize the system somewhat and stay around my original laptop's cost ($3500)

Or I'll try to get ahold of the guy who approved my system exchange, and see if I can upgrade that way.. I just want DX11 :D

They most likely will give you the 4870's for 260m's. Only if they are out will they upgrade them. ;) Also they won't give much in way of your input. A build team will decide what parts are in supply and what your spec's will be. Even your Rep cannt say much. Reason is its a replacement not a sale so this is what we give you, kind of thinking. Unit will be made in Tenn. and shipped to you NBD if your state side. You will be happy with what they put together, they do a good job. Good Luck! :D

    Super,

What was wrong with your R1 ? What was the reason for them to offer you that swap ?

    Hi theres,

Yeh see if you can get the 5870s. That would be great.

Also Dell doesn't use the dollar value that you originally paid for your original system. The newer systems might be priced less however their performance would be much better and an upgrade compared to what you paid for with your original system.

Most of the time Dell would look at the base specs they are selling in your particular country and give you those base specs unless you have much faster hardware in your original system therefore they will upgrade you even further.

See if you can speak to them politely however if they are firm and don't want to budge then the offer they gave you is pretty good also. So no real lost in the end. At least you tried.

    Good Luck! :)

    Cheers.

The story and timeline of events are longer than the bible, but here goes:

    - started with DPC latency
    - downloaded beta nvidia driver to fix it, but it cut down my hardware application and game fps by 50%+
    - on the phone with support almost daily
    - downloaded and burned A05 BIOS update
    - optical drive divided by itself and broke
    - service call to replace optical drive, after which the computer wouldn't start at all
    - finally got the system to start, but no screen activity whatsoever
    - service call to replace the video cards, nada
    - service call to replace the motherboard, bingo
    - after said service call the system will now randomly explode, flicker the lcd screen and grind like crazy
    - and i still have terrible system and gaming performance

whew! and thank god for that system replacement, mmmmm

No word yet until Monday, that's when the rep who approved my replacement will be back and give me a call. I've definitely got my fingers crossed on the dual 5870s :)

When you get the service ticket number you can punch it into the website and get a complete parts list. Some of the parts aren't necessarily clear from the descriptions but if you post the list on here the assorted forumers can help you out with that they are.

how do you get an R1 to R2 upgrade? I have an R1 and would like a free upgrade, who would not eh?

(A few of you know that I have a small book I can write about the problems I have had with my 17x... is that what you need to qualify?)
