hello i think you have a problem . If i were you , i should see my graphic card (thermal paste) and dust .
-
When i see your score the problem should be the thermal pads (wrong positionning on chips ?)
-
Hope this isn't a dumb question but what SHOULD the temp run at? I've just received my M17xR2 and have the same video card as the OP. Just curious for a base line.
-
i have a crossfire 5870 and my max temps on load are 85 °
With Furmark , i can go to 94 ° max
With the last Dell beta drivers my max temps are 75 ° -

For a new pc ,changing thermal pads isn't a good advice for me

Well... he could also contact dell and get a new card

Those are about the temps I had when I first bought my laptop. I do a lot of hardware/cooling modding for other systems, so I decided to investigate the cooling of the M17x R2.
The cooling of the M17X r2 is actually excellent, but it isnt connected properly to the HD5870M. The cooling pads are designed more for the HD4870m so this causes problems with the HD5870m (your temps).
So long as you follow the directions perfectly, keep the thermal pads, and not damage your cards, you will be fine for warranty (just make sure to replace the thermal pads if you need to RMA).

wow, thats really not comforting at all. I just got my new R2 yesteday with the dual 5870s... do you know if they fixed this issue in the factory?
-
They wont fix it, because fixing it would mean they would be admitting there is a problem.
Its not a design flaw per se, just an oversight. Everything still runs fine at ~110c though.

My system never went over 86C even with stock pads/paste using furmark. Nobody should be getting 100+ with this machine, if you are, chances are you have a bad paste job and/or poor heatsink that isn't making proper contact. I'd call Dell for a replacement or do Ash's mod. With the mod, my temp never exceeds 75C at stock clocks and even when I OC to 900+ it barely reaches the low 80s.
-
I really dont understand you guys . ..
This is a problem, i got exact the same behaviour on my 1 month "Brand New" machine, i got a card replacement, fans and heatsink replacement, and the problem still, also, this got even worse, i was able to feel the hot on the left side of the keyboard, i got another card replacement and i saw the workd "REFURBISHED PART" on the video card box, Dell said its policy of them, again, the problem still, i have now a schedule replacement for my mobo and the card, and the fans and the heatsinks, this is just insane; my place is not cold so i will got the Cryo NZXT cooler, i did already, waiting for it delivered to my country.
You have a problem with your fans, they are not working properly at all, you got 6 RPM and thats means they are doing nothing !!!; you got that log doing what ? I got similar results (4 RPM) playing Sniper Ghost Warrior -
This really doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy at all lol.
-
To reiterate - the cards are designed to run safely at ~100 celcius.
They are in no danger.
Start worrying if they get to 110c.

I've never seen my GPU temps exceed 81C, but I have a cooler on at all times as well. As Ashtefere has said multiple times, your temps are within the operational temperatures of the GPU. The only thing you might be able to argue is that they may not last as long.

Granted that max operational temps are 100C, what it all boils down to is the life expectancy of the cards and degradation of hardware and the cards at these temps over time.
I believe that what some of us that are dealing with these temps are trying to figure out is, is it to be expected that we will see major hardware failure due to these temps and also what is the life expectancy of the cards?
@Ashtefere,
Speaking for myself, I think your cooling mod is an excellent idea! However, I am a bit hesitant to go diving into my system just yet to perform this procedure partially due to my lack of experience and also because of warranty issues. It is frustrating because the means to properly maintain my systems temps are right in front of me but then I am fearful of going in and breaking something, voiding my warranty. -
Basically, if you think your machine will outlast its warranty, then do the mod.

Here is a grab of my temps after 1 hour playing AVP on max settings no pasting or mods
That's with window open, outside temp is a miserable 12c with rain.

Well according to this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/513152-question-about-3dmark-06-score-2.html
The new VBIOS are out which will solve the temp issue apparantley. Not sure how 100% true this is since I haven't tried it but hey, maybe it works?
