Hi all, I have a CF5870 m17x. I was reading these forums and saw people talking about the temperatures their cards are running at. Can anyone please tell me how or where I can check the cards temperatures?

One more thing. Half the time, I use my m17x while sitting on my bed :S so the machine is sitting on the bed. Will this affect the cards in any way as the vents below might be blocked off by the mattress?

Also, since I'm just a n00b here, can someone tell me how do I know the fps of a game that I'm playing? For example, I'm playing ut3 (I love UT series :)) How do I check the fps while I'm playing?

GPU-Z for gpu temps. You can do a search for the program.

In UT3 you can press F10 for the console and type stat fps to get the FPS.

Thanks for the replies guys :) I'll install Fraps and the temp tool as soon as I get home today. Anyone can tell me if its bad using a high powered laptop like the m17x cf on the mattress? any heat issues possible? or is it ok?

Mattresses don't usually dissipate heat too well. Usually you'll want to put it on a surface that not only dissipates heat but also allows the fans on the bottom to get air intake (a decent desk, or better yet, an actual laptop cooler like the Cryo).

Mattresses tend to give in to the weight of the laptop and cover the bottom fan intakes.

If you prop the back up, it might be ok. I'd recommend propping the back up regardless of what you have it on though.

DO NOT put this machine on your bed to play games The fabric will prevent the cooling system from working right and you WILL overheat your gpu and cpu and seriously shorten the lifespan of your machine.Depending on your cpu the new i7 series run hot anyways so Put the computer on a laptop table at least.

guys, you've left me with a dielema. Ok, i think i need to tell you guys how i use my system. I travel a Lot, by lot, i mean, a LOT all over the globe. So basically, i'm a crazy old guy travelling to places you'd normally not be keen to go to. Each place i go to, i stay on for like a month. Now, most of the time, I carry a lot of stuff with me that i end up using the only little table in my hotel room (I dont even have a good sized table in quite a few places like paris :S) as a placer holder for stuff that i carry. In a few days of reaching a place, my table becomes unrecognizable to the hotel owners themselves. basically, i have no table to keep this thing on. Ok, so i still need to play games.. something that i've been doing since pac-man came out decades ago (yeah, i'm actually that old :)) so my only option is the bed or the ground. Ground hurts my arse and bed hurts my little pet m17x.
What i was thinking about was, is there a nice coolingsystem of some kind that i can use to keep my laptop on the bed? if so, can any of you guys recommend it to me?

    Hi folks
I just got my video card replacement, also, a total fan kit replacement, but, i am kinda concerned, i can feel the heat over the left side of the keyboard, is not too much on idle (not tested on games yet), believe or not, i cant remind if i feel that heat before the replacement :p, i dont know if this is because of my mind or is normal ? . .
Also, what you think about this temps on idle ?
    Environment temperature is 29%, thanks

A little hot on the GPU. What game did you play to get those temps? Is your notebook on a flat firm surface and nothing obstructing the GPU vents?

The machine is over a flat firm surface and nothing is obstructing the fans, also, i got two fans today, dell sent to me an extra fan and this is where should be the other card (which i don't have), and well, my environment temperature is that above, 29C, i got this switch of cards today, the heatsink was also replaced . .
That was running Spiner ghost warrior

GDDR5 does run quite hot, that could be the normal peak/max gaming temp given the high room temp.

    Get a cooler pad. ;)

    Normal temps :)
Still, look for a cooler pad since your room temp is very high.

I use GPU-z to determine my GPU temps but there is 1 MAIN reading, then down the bottom are THREE readings.

What are they? what do they indicate?

Is the main reading the actualy GPU core? is it something else?

Im getting for the main reading about 110-120 for the GPU MAIN reading, and then it goes:
    50-60 first reading
110-120 second reading (same as main reading)
    50-60 third reading

    Whilst running furmark.

    What do they mean?
