I was just thinking doesn't your wife or significant other question why do you need so many laptops/computers/tablets at home? I got to thinking about it as well, it seems a bit overkill lol

    Dell Desktop Core I650 / GTX 470 Fermi / 16gb / gaming machine
    Acer Laptop / Core I5 / 8GB/ Intel HD / work machine
    Lenovo Netbook / casual internet
Samsung Galaxy Tablet / casual internet
Acer Iconia Tablet / casual internet
    IPad 2 / casual internet

and then the Alienware that is enbound....

is anyone else a little overboard?

I had an Inspiron 1720, M17x R2, and M11x R1. Gave the 1720 to my brother. But my wife does roll her eyes at me. Especially lastnight when I suggested I wanted to build a desktop. I have an old mobo to use and some CPU chips.

I bought her an Inspiron 15. Although at the time I bought it I was overseas with both of my notebooks and hers died. Which just needed a new HDD, but I hated her Toshiba Satallite so I replaced it. Set up the toshiba for my Grandma, which got stolen :( Who steals a laptop from dear old granny?

Four computers total, two of which are mine, and two are my girlfriends. The latter two are not gaming systems per se.

    My two systems are:

    - Franken-desktop (Athlon II X2 250, 4GB, EVGA GTX 560, CM 500w PS)
    - M17x R3 (i7-2720qm, 8GB, GTX 460)

Currently, my laptop outperforms my desktop in all games I own. The Athlon II 250 is a real POS though, and a bottleneck for most games. However, the GTX 560 is very powerful.

Right now, I have the desktop downstairs for general use, casual gaming, and printing stuff... Until I upgrade the CPU in spring... then I may use it more for gaming. The laptop is upstairs in my room, and is used for almost everything.

I don't really think any of it is overkill though.

I use - at the moment at least - my desktop in my signature, an ASUS Transformer for college / on-the-go casual stuff, and I also have a server used for a bunch of other things.

I've actually slowed down. I was getting new desktop upgrades every 6 months or so (usually video cards), but getting into laptops now, its actually slowed me down. AND to make matters worse, my wife loves tech gadgets. She wants new dual core phones, new laptops, new computers...all that stuff...so i have no one to keep me in check lol

Here is a list of my current computer hardware that will inevitably change in coming months. Either an amd 7900's upgrade will be forthcoming to the m17x R3 or a new m18x and the wife inherits my m17x:

My laptop: Listed in sig...upgrades: Sound, CPU, Ram, SSD, thermal paste

Wife's laptop: Asus G73 with nvidia gtx 460m

My 5 yr old son inherited: Core i7 970 hexacore @ 4.4ghz, 12 gigs ddr3 1600, 120 gig Patriot Wildfire SSD, Nvidia GTX 570 SLI'ed and heavily overclocked

So much overkill in this thread, I got the M17x R3 to replace my desktop and be my primary computer. With the 5+ hours of battery it is plenty long enough as a laptop, and I feel like it is powerful enough for desktop gaming.

If everything works out I plan to only have the M17x, and then I will still have but not use my current desktop.

Technically yes (2 laptops currently owned), but I use the Alienware 98% of the time. I also have an old Compaq Presario 2100 that I use as a word processor when I travel, but that's not too often. The wife also has her Dell Vostro 1510 laptop, and we have no desktop model in the home. Honestly, I don't think I'll ever buy another desktop again.

I had a m11x and a m14x before I sold them for the money to buy a new m17x. Now I'm 'in between' laptops until it arrives :(

Will probably get a tablet sometime to have something a little more portable instead of another laptop.

(typing this on my girldfriends compaq nx9020 with a whopping 1,6ghz cpu!!!)

Well, I have 2 desktop. E6600 and Q8600. Using Q8600 for almost anything casual. E6600 one is sitting as a living room monster in case we have movie night.

My wife's using my old 13" macbook. Got my R3 a few months ago and is using it for almost anything work/confidential related stuff.

Have an iPad 2 for son. He plays it and my wife's 3GS in turn...

I'm not sure what your definition of overkill is. I work with computer and work with computer is what they pay me for... I mean, when you have some wacky idea to program, nothing is overkill. You never know what you'll need.

Depends on what you mean by desktop, I've got all kinds of old Windows 98 and XP machines in the garage that I haven't gotten around to sorting out and figuring out what to keep and what to throw away. I also got my trusty old AMD acer as a backup for my Alien monster. :)

Some Toshiba laptop which kinda sucks but does its job as the main PC.

And of course the beast below. :)

I think I will become one of the "notebook only" crowd very soon. I really found the M17x to be more than enough to replace my desktop at the moment. Since, I will want more, I can just get the M18x and have a "close to desktop" type notebook.

PsiPR0 what M17x do you have? An R2? If you have an R2 just get some 6970's, 6990's, or 580's. You will have something far better than an M18x. RGBLED + any of those GPU's FTW.

Yep, it's an R2, however I would use the M18x as a less mobile (is that possible?) option to the M17xR2(Which I would take with me everywhere).

I have considered the 6990m, etc, but with the M18xR2 rumors out, I am going to hold off on modding the M17xR2. I want at least two Alienware laptops. :)

    2x Alienware (m17xR2 and an older m9750)
    1x Acer Ferrarri 5000
    2x Dell laptops

I have two running PCs both in NAS mode.

I have 2 iPhones (one for work), 1 WP7, 1 Kindle, and one Pocket eDge.

Most are used daily for multiple purposes. This does not include all the spare parts in the basement :D

I can be considered among the guys that have too much:

AW M17xR2 - Primary gaming machine
Dell XPS M1730 - Backup gaming machine
    Dell Vostro 1320 - Wife's Laptop
Dell Inspiron 8600 - Kids Laptop
iPad 2 - Kids Tablet (gift from godfather)
Motorola Xoom - Casual browsing and e-mail
Dell Studio XPS 1640 - Work Laptop
Acer H340 - Home NAS Server

Thinking about getting a Macbook for the Wife and retiring the Inspiron 8600....
