Looking at the weight, it can't be plastic. It also suggests that it could well have two GPU slots/fans.

And it looks like British users are being screwed over again with the price...I mean, we're paying more pounds than Americans pay dollars...

And, 6870M? I thought it was meant to be the 6970M. That's a disappointment.

EDIT: Configuration also shows that the 3D screen doesn't work with the 6870M. Looks like we need to wait longer for ATi 3D.

I'm wondering what drive they use. The only 500GB hybrid drive I'm aware of existing right now is the Momentus XT.

I am confused, I thought it was coming out with 3 graphics card option including the 6970M.

I also thought the 460M was less powerful than the 6870 yet they put it as more powerful.

Looks like they've dropped that for now.

I could have sworn the UK site had the 6970M listed under 'upgrade options' on this page, but now it says 6870M. (They don't even have any option other than the 460M. Odd.)

As for whether the 460M is more powerful or not, we won't see that until 6870 benchmarks are available.

Well I haven't purchased any Alienware products in the past. I know a lot of people are disappointed with the R3 coming from an R2. But I have had my eye on the 17x line for a few months, and this seems like it is a pretty good thing, at least for my taste. Especially the price.

I do have to admit, the price in the States is excellent. I can configure it with the 460M and the 3D screen for under $2000.

If I can get it for that sort of price in the UK, I'll definitely go for it when the time comes. I wouldn't be able to pass that up for £1300 (the equivelant of $2000).

the only question I have is will the 3D screen display 3D from the hdmi in? because that would save having to buy a blu-ray drive if I can use my ps3 for watching 3D movies on the m17x r3.

Is it typically cheaper to get like 4GB RAM from the site then add more on my own?

is it a downgrade or is it a downgrade?

    - 1900 x 1080 (vs 1900 x 1200 in R2)
    - No SLI/Crossfire config

the looks is cooler though, the back especially (but thats subjective anyways)

IMO, would probably get this over the R2 if I could mostly so that I could brag to friends. :O
Looks alot better than the R2. But performance wise maybe not so.

Plus that claim of 6 hours of battery life is extremely attractive, though it probably will be like 5...

I'd only assume that it'll still have 3D capabilities from the HDMI in. It meets the requirements for a 3D TV that the PS3 needs, I can't assume it'd be any different from the HDMI input for a 3D HDTV.

Yes. Much cheaper. I got my 8GB kit for £100, that's about $155, compared to $300 for the upgrade on their site.

I believe this is why they'll either keep on making the R2 as their 'performance' flagship model, or replace the R2 at some point with something even more powerful (such as the much rumoured M18x).

I think the R3 is aimed at a more mainstream market with its pricetag and 3D tech. That would explain the lack of Extreme processor option.

I'm still a bit underwhelmed. As someone who is on the fence with a g73sw and this new alienware, it isn't exactly that competitive. Closer than typical pricing would dictate though, and UK buyers get absolutely buggered. Every potential European buyer should make friends with a US buyer because that is just unacceptable.

Yeah the price is great, of course Dell had to have the starting config have a 900P screen, lol. I wasn't thinking about getting the 3D screen but after selecting the screen and the 460M the price was only $1900, of course i think i may pick up the 240W power supply, then wait until i see a 2820QM on Ebay. i'm going to wait just a little until they add the 6970M and wait for some reviews on both the 6970M and the 6870M.

I have never bought an Alienware before, I heard that Dell has free shipping, is this true for newer models, or do they just have that option available every so often?

Why no 6970? What are the specs of the 6870? Is it basically a repackaged 5870? I thought the 460M is WEAKER than the 5870? I would only get this lappy if they offer the 6970.

Try calling and getting discounts. Some reps supposedly give significant discounts, even the likes of £400. That certainly makes it more competitive.

    Lack of availability perhaps?

As for 460M vs 6870M, we'll only find out when benchmarks come out.

That makes more sense. I thought that was heavy for a laptop that was supposedly plastic and single GPU.

Yeah i'll try doing that, I just moved to the U.S from Canada so i'm used to paying a lot when it comes to shipping. When i bought my clevo from the U.S for $1,500 I think i paid about $200 for shipping then another $300 in taxes.

The sad thing is that most people will pay that price. It's to do with brand as much as anything.

I just don't understand why they mark it up THAT much though. I mean, that's clearly extortion. It's well over 60% more expensive; even taking VAT, shipping, import costs etc. into account, it shouldn't come anywhere close to that expensive.

thats why i said the looks is subjective, .. i like the looks but i wouldnt trade it for performance

maybe if it is cheaper, ... is it? didnt fully configure one yet.

and i noticed that the 3D (the 120Hz) display isnt compatible with the ATI Graphics they are offering! .. if someone wants it than he is going to be stuck with the Nvidia's.

IMO, the performance trade off isn't that bad for me. If they start offering the 6970s then the M17x R3 will be around 10% worse @ stock clocks vs. R2. CPU performance with the 2820QM probably trumps the 920XM with some TS thrown in... And this is coming from a single-gpu M15x owner so I haven't basked in the light of dual-gpus yet...

well the 6870 is basically SLOWER than the old 5870 according to nbcheck
    AMD Radeon HD 6870M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

Basically I am waiting on the 6970. I am not in the market for super high end but want to replace my m15x. I figure I can get the mid range CPU which is reasonably priced and the 6970 for about 2k...whenever they offer that GPU. It's pretty lame that they mention the 2gb 6970 and don't have it on the configurator. They really just want to sell that nvidia stuff (Nvidia probably paid to have them push their 3d anyways and if the 6970 was offered then it wouldn't drive their 3d sales..imo)
