This will probably sound stupid but...

Hello I have been reading these forums to make an informed choice and decided
that an alienware laptop suits my needs. I have a friend however who I know does not know much in the way of computers but since I will be ordering this on a PC that may have an infection I thought I should ask. I have run antivirus programs and they come up clean but I understand there are some that can hide themselves. The computer may just be slow as it is a bit older but better safe than sorry.

Would it be possible for a virus to attach itself from the ordering pc to my orders file and then copy itself to a new laptop while the information is being put onto its hard drive? I plan to store a backup image on DVD almost as soon as I unbox it but if a virus could get on it before I can image it then it won't make a difference. From what I know about computers this sounds crazy but if it would be possible i'd like to plan ahead and then possibly just do a fresh install as soon as I get it.

    Thanks for any input :).

No way in hell. You'll be fine man. God forbid something like that could ever happen on any regular basis.

    hahaha thanks for the laugh.
Not possible. Even if the virus could go from your computer to Dell, it would only infect their server. And your new alienware computer is not hooked to that server in any way so you are fine.

But then again, maybe it is some brand new super EVIL virus that goes from the server, infects all the Dell technicians computers, enable the wireless network card and starts searching for your computer and goes in to your new alienware laptop wireless and enter hybernation until its pray, you, boot up the computer for the first time.

    PURE EVIL :swoon:

If dell sold you a computer with a virus on it and it caused any problem to you, I think you would be able to take dell to court for that. So this isn't something for you to worry about, it's dells problem.
Unless dell has a condition in the fine print about this sort of thing.

If there ever were a real world Skynet, I'm positive that Dell/Alienware would have something to do with it. :)

the only way you could get your virus into the new comp is if your transfer the files to it and the virus is amongst those files but that would not be through dell that would be after you got it.
