    Question One:

On the Dell site when ordering a 580M for the M17x it does not allow you to select the 120hz screen for 3D due to a compatibility issue. Is this simply a bug they need to fix?

    Question Two:

The 580M does not have that 20% discount going on currently for GPU's, was this intentional?

    Question Three:

Would a 3D M17x r3 use Nvidia Optimus? I remember reading somewhere that 3D laptops weren't likely to use the technology. Because on my M11x r2 I absolutely HATE it due to numerous issues I have with it. The most significant of which would be that my professional 3D modeling software I need to use simply cannot run, and after about a month long discussion with technical support ranging from them to Nvidia, we came to the conclusion it was Optimus, and not ever likely to get fixed.

Thanks for taking the time to read!

    1. No idea. It should be compatible in a bit but just gotta wait.
    2. Probably, they probably want to test the waters first before offering discounts.
    3. No, any 3D setup would not use Optimus. Support may be later offered, but at this time it is a no go.

    Question one:
No it's not a bug, the only card you can get the 120hz screen with is the 460m, very stupid but that's the way Dell or Nvidia apparantly want it. There's something coded in the BIOS that prevents the use of anything but the 460m, speculation was that Nvidia has an agreement of some sort with Dell preventing any other card working with the 120hz screen.
    Question two:
Probably, Dell always pulls crap like that, they never discount the best parts. It's just a marketing/sales ploy to try to keep selling parts other than the top performance ones.
    Question three:
The 3D version doesn't have switchable graphics so no Opti-mess, anything Nvidia on the R3 other than the 3D version will automatically come with Opti-mess. The AMD versions have manually switchable GPU's.

@ Your response to Question 1:

So wait... are they EVER going to support it with the 580M? :(

    @ Question 2:

    Well, that sucks.

    @ Question 3:

    Awesome! That makes me happy.

No guarantees on the 3D, to be honest with what AW has shown unless someone in the aftermarket scene finds a way to hack it to make it possible it probably won't happen anytime soon if at all.

Yeah it does suck, but it makes sense from a business perspective.

Yeah I personally hate Optimus, it's the only thing holding me back from grabbing a M14x.

It didn't prevent me from getting my M14x, though. Coming next week or so. :D

Well, hopefully they'll get the 580M onboard with 3D soon. I've been loving their external 3D screens. «Running two of them right now, 3D is stunning.».

    Thank you for your help/insight.

You bet, I'd love to have the 120hz screen with a more powerful GPU, 3D is just meh to me now. I had the 3D version to start but after about a half hour of gaming it gets old for me after the first few weeks.

I typically use my 3D on an off. Depends what mood I'm in. :)
