My cpu is getting around 90C and I'm seeing some throttling in my gaming. This just started happening a few days ago. I had a tech redo the thermal paste really well maybe 6 - 8 months back and I really don't do much heavy gaming on it. Recently I've been playing Skyrim and that's when the problems started. Is 90C too high for a cpu? I have dust in my fans that I'm goign to clean out tonight after I get some aerosol, but other than that I'm not sure what I can do. I'm considering upgrading to 6970s or 6990s and if I do that I'll repaste again.

90c? Are you overclocked? At 100c, your CPu shuts off, so ya, its a tad high

in place of using a can of air to clean the dust, you should open the laptop up, and clean it out. I know the R2 suxxx big time for dust, as I had one not too long ago... and cleaning that thing was a pain in the @$$~! using the can of air will only clean so much, and if you have bunnies in there, you will never get them out with a can (not to mention bunnies will block 90% of the fans air flow). the R1, and R2 had sick problems for dust... "dust goes in, dust dose not come out". you really need to open it to clean it right. Im happy Alienware fixed this with the R3, been a few months now (by this time with my R2 I would have a lot of dust), I opened my R3 up, no dust or bunnies 0_o like nothing~! and I run this thing almost 24/7 0_0

I would post a link to videos on how to do this, but you will find many of them on youtube...

How hard is it to open up and clean? I don't want to take any components out or anything.

Eh, not sure there. I get 80C in SC2. I got 90 in skyrim and 3dmark 11 testing.

if you're getting 90c on a stock 920xm with zero overclocking, you've got to repaste and reseat the heatsink. Those temps are too high
