I recently upgraded my Alienware 17 (r5) to 980M (from Clevo), but there seems to be some throttling problems (not sure) with the 980M. Usually the 980M can reach about x4200+ in 3DMARK 11, but mine only got 3700+.

I got my laptop with the A14 bios, and i thinks the problem might be the bios becuase some of my friends got the same problem after they upgraded their bios version to A14. Before flashing the A14 bios, the score is about 4200 which is normal, but once you flashed A14, it goes down to 3700, and flashing the bios back to the previous version doesn't work.

Sorry that my English might be confusing, i did the research in Chinese websites but didn't find any solutions, so i have to come here to ask if you guys got any ideas. :)

    Any help is appreciated! :)

    60hz/120Hz panel?
Using Oc for gpu? or vbios mod?
    Cpu oc?
wich river you're using for your nvidia.
What's your score for 980m in 3dmark11 with 720p performance for benchmark mode and temp result also ( you can see it with hwinfo64)

Thanks for your reply : )
    It's the 60hz one
No any OC for cpu and gpu, and no modified vbios either,
the driver version is 347.88, btw i tried several different versions but the result didn't change
Havn't tried the 720p yet, I will do it later. The maximum temp i got in Furmark is 70℃

You're using in optimus or dedicated mode?
If dedicated, it's 'normal' to have throttling, i advise you like me to use Optimus mode.

Just use Optimus mode.. I get 0 throttling problems.. Dedicated is just not worth it in these machines with 980M due to throttling...

I tried both, and optimus mode didn't really make it better, the score was still around x3800...

You got 240w and 3pipe heatsink? To avoid score problem, go in safe mode, uninstal nvwidia with ddunistaler reboot with f7 option= signature disable and instal 347.88 mod

Yes, it is the 240w one and i have the 3pipes, and i think i eliminated all the possible reasons about drivers. As i know all the a14 bios users got the same problems, i think it's probably the bios problem

Would you be comfortable with me walking you through how to flash the vbios? It's probably just the buggy original vbios causing major throttling ( or I could do it through teamviewer )

OP, take up hackintoshihope's suggestion and flashed unlocked vBIOS.. That should fix all issues and give you max performance...

I could... upload the file etc... but in regards to giving support to the developers: NVIDIA 'Maxwell' VBIOS mods you will need to run legacy rom (not in dedicated mode) also run slv7 mnvflash in windows. If you have any other questions let me know. You will need 5 quality posts to get the file.
