I know I made a thread about this before. But sorry coz am too lazy to search for it :)

I have this ticking sound on the left side of my R3 where my fan is located. Before, I suspected that it came from my HD but I upgraded to SSD and still the ticking sound persisted.

This ticking sound will only come up every time my fan will try to rev up. It's like three ticking sound and the fan will rev up. Here's the sound like. I made two recordings of it. You may want to turn up your vol a bit.

Download Memo2.m4a from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

Please tell me if you have the same thing in your R3.

Didnt listen to the recording. But call Dell and let them send you a new fan. Very easy to replace.

FYI guys, my temps are ok. The fan also pass the hardware test. But this sound just bothers me a bit sometimes.

I will be calling DELL. Will they let me replace the fan myself? It's pretty easy.

The fan works thats why it passed the hardware test.

It sounds like something is unbalanced.

Dunno about the M14x, I never had that sound on both my M17x R3's.

I dont where you live so I cant give you a number. :p

Best thing is to call Custommer Care, they will open a case for it. Do NOT email.

Did you check the fan blade's itself, are they loose?

Just called Dell. They will replace both the cpu and gpu fan for me :) Very nice tech support person I talked with.

Now I will be keeping an eye to the technician! I don't want him to break anything and make everything worst! Good thing the tech support told me he'll be sending extra cpu, gpu, and keyboard if in any case the technician breaks anything. And if the problem still persists they can change the cpu and gpu right away :)

btw, they asked me if I want to have a new unit I said no.lol. The laptop is working exceptionally except for the ticking sound. I don't want a new unit where I am not sure if it will be riddled with worst issues!

If MOBO is the problem I will surely demand a new unit!

+1 For AW tech support so far. Hopefully everything will work out fine ;)

Not much that can go wrong. 3 screws each and a connector each. You can even do it yourself.

Yeah I know. I've tinkered with my r3 a couple of times already. I asked them if i can do it myself but they said they'll just send a tech. I have no problem with that but it's nice to just play safe and watch how he will take care of my r3.

The technician just installed the fans. We tested everything and the ticking sound was gone. However, when the tech left and I was browsing the net for 15 or so the same issue came back again. Now am suspecting its coming from the cpu coz it only happens when am loading lots of flash animations and opening a lots of sites that requires heavy cpu usage.

But I will not be calling DELL again. I will leave it as is. Too much hassle calling just for this. It's not that audible anyway. Can only hear it when I am in a quiet room. And the computer is performing really well. So that's it for this issue! If the cpu breaks, then that's the time I will call them.

Thanks for all the help guys! I'll rep all who replied to this thread and tried to help me! :)
