I am planning on getting the M17x with 3D but I want to get your opinions on this. There are a few things that i wanted to know from people who already have it:

I know there is a HDMI in port but will let you display 3d games from an xbox or ps3?

And are high end games like crysis, COD4, BlackOps, and metro 2033 playable with the 3D?

What is the benefit of the 120HZ screen that is bundled with the 3D vision?

    Any feedback is appreciated :D

COD4, BlackOps, sure. Crysis and Metro at reduced settings; your graphics card needs to do 2x the work to achieve the same smoothness when you throw those 3d glasses on.

But if the graphics card (the gx 460m) is capable of doing 2x the work?

I am assuming you got the non-3D system, right?

It is more like "what do you prefer:"
    A) Laptop with a 3D screen where you use the 3D screen few times a month. You have the option to use it, but the cost is more heat and less frames.
    B) Laptop without a 3D screen that you can use to output 3D to a HDTV. Pros: Integrated graphics enabled, less heat, better GPU. Cons: Not able to view 3D content on you laptop few times per month.

I would choose the alternative B. However if you consider that you might use the 3D function every single day, watch movies and play games in 3D, then alternative A could be just as good as B. I consider the 3D more of a option than a must have feature

    Depends....

If you configure the laptop the same as the 3D model without the 3D screen it comes to 1874 US dollars. You will have Optimus and some WIDI/WIMAX, dont know the exact name.

The 3D model cost 1799 US dollars. Without Optimus and the ability to use WIDI/WIMAX.

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

The 460m already tanks in Metro and Crysis. Now add 3d and halve that performance. Its bad. Dreams of max settings 3D game-play are far from realized on laptops.

The 6970m is by far the superior card, though things may change if/when AW offers the 485m (Both of these contenders approach DESKTOP GTX460 in performance). The 460m doesn't have a chance; don't choke it with 3D.

Whats the WiMax good for? I know for WIDI you need to get an extra adapter for a bout a hundred bucks

I'm sorry but notebookcheck is pretty inaccurate. If you look closely, they use different systems for nearly every game test, making the data kind of random and inaccurate. Other people in this forum have stated other reasons to shun it, I just cannot think of them at the moment.

Yes, the 460m cannot play every game in max w/3D. But with a decent OC, and lowering the bar to high or even medium (gasp!) it will handle very smoothly.

I also await the 485m. I'm pretty sure that it will be added since AW wants to stay competitive with Sager/Clevo. Also, the 485m is better than the desktop 460m, it almost matches the 560 Ti.

So if you are going to wait for 485 thats means the 460m is not good enough

why wait, you can already buy them (485) from a variety of sources. Sure, you'll probably save like $300 if you get it as part of an actual r3 order - but you're also likely to be waiting for 4+ months for the option to show up (at least a month after it is available in the fabled M18x or it will hurt sales of the newer product).

I am perfectly content with the 460m currently. The 485m is merely to future proof it more, since I plan on using this laptop for the next 4-5years.

Yes, I know the 460m isnt the best mobile gpu, but its still more than capable for the casual gamer, and I have no complaints about not maxing out metro 2033

In my other post I certainly mentioned that the 460m was no contender for maximum settings, only lowered settings were possible in 3d (I specifically mentioned Crysis and Metro as areas where the 460M will drop the ball; COD series likely can run at max in 3d).

I see your point about notebookcheck, however I'm not sure why you're disagreeing with the points I made, cause everything you said agrees with everything I just said. I think that puts us on the same side :p

I actually forgot, I once did have 3D way back in 1999 :D

It was the ASUS Riva TNT2 Deluxe with 3D glasses.

I played Quake III, UT, and Kingpin most often with it. Other games too. The glasses were heavy and hard on the nose. Although they worked fine with the 60Hz-85Hz CRT I had at the time. :p

Was enjoyable, but when the GeForce 1 came out, I got that and the 3D was brushed aside.

I don't disagree with you on the fact that the 460m cant max out all games in 3d. That's a given. I was just disagreeing on how you were pointing out that dreams of max settings on 3d were impossible, they are depending on what game. Notebookcheck is a lil inaccurate, so I just didnt agree on using that as a source.

If you are for the 485m gpu, then we are most definitely on the same side. I personally plan on putting one in my r3 as soon as I can get my hands on one :D

This might seem stupid for some people here, but I ordered a Nintendo 3DS to take care of my 3D needs and cravings.

Putting aside the awesome power of the M17x, the 3DS should do a few things the M17x cannot, like no glasses, augmented reality cards, take photos and video clips in 3D, it just something small and a bit different.

    Just a cheap Alternative :)

The 3d brings some life to some older games though. Like painkiller, it runs great, and the visuals are great, lots of blood flying everywhere. Also, it can run that one in 3d on battery power alone.
