So I was in the m15 forums, and it seems that the m15 struggles to run the games from this series (empire, Napoleon, etc) on high detail.

What can i expect from the R3 with the 460m?

My guess would be that you are going to be looking at a mix of high and mostly medium settings. Remember the 460m isn't as powerful as the 6970m or the cf 5800 series on the r2.

You might be able to max everything out except the viewing distance. I find that to be a rather challenging task for a gpu.

As I still have my M15x, which has a 260m in it, I would presume the 460m, along with the extra juice of the Sandy Bridge would significantly boost settings ability. If I can find a demo of one of these, maybe I'll give it a try as they really aren't my type of game (enough to buy outright, unless a super deal). I'm running the 460 in my R3...so far zero issues with CoD: MW, CoD: BO, or WoW. Just received it last week, so taking a bit of time to download my stuff from Steam. Working on D/L Dragon Age Origins now.

Finally, not sure why folks always want to turn almost every question here into a debate on different versions of different computers. In this example, OP didn't ask for reference to 6970 or 5800. Neither of those options are available for the M15x, that I am aware of. Just because I chose to purchase an R3 takes nothing away from your R2...

Actually I wasn't trying to turn this into a debate. I made a mistake with the 5800 series reference because I was thinking of something else.

Since he said he was wondering what to expect using an r3 with a 460m, I took it as he might not have ordered it yet and was wondering how good it would play on there. So I gave him my opinion on how I thought it would perform and then I said how I thought it would perform on the other r3 with the 6970. I actually was trying to help him out based on the fact that he doesn't have the 460m.

Basically if I came on here and said "no it won't play with max settings" then to me I'm not being helpfull. I gave him my opinion on how I thought it would work as well as other possible solutions to get the game to work better.

While I'm new here, having to tip toe around these r2 vs r3 topics is stupid. I feel I have to reread everything I post just to avoid an issue like this and not get a topic closed. Ban ppl that cant act mature and civil. It's as easy as that.

This is a good question because I only play RTS's and would also like to know what to expect playing Total War on the R3. I ordered mine with the 6970.

I believe Total War is a CPU intensive game.. Therefore having a Sandy Bridge proc should increase performance over the m15. Not to mention you also have the 460 which is a big increase in performace as well.

I don't disagree with your tiptoe comment (as most forums do allow debate). I do get tired of folks implying how inadequate they think the 460 is based on benchmarks...benchmarks does not a gaming experience make...and the fact it has run everything I've thrown at it so far (granted it's not much yet).

Sorry if that first response seemed blunt, wasn't my intention. But folks (not you specifically) seem to get all bent out of shape when someone doesn't want an SLI'ed R2 or an R3 with a 6970, instead of just answering a question.

Back on topic :) , anyone know if the games the OP asked the question about have available demos?

If there is a demo then that would be a good test for the gpu as far as rts games. It seems, that since empire total war game, that the engine has been the same since so if a demo is out there it would be a good judge.

    @The shirt,

It's all good, we keep it mature and civilized which proves debating could work. I don't even have an alienware right now lol so until my r3 comes in the mail I can't say it's better ;)

    well thats interesting......

Id be very keen if anyone has the time, to test the 460m with Empire/Napoleon/Shogun2 with all settings maxed out.

To be honest, ill be a bit dissapointed if this top of the line beast (yes i know the 6970 is more powerfull) cant max out this type of RTS.

Don't forget too that, regardless which card is more powerful, you very well might be able to overclock the 460m to play it on max settings.

I am hoping the new Total War plays well with my new R3.. We shall see

On a side note, I went to new egg and they are offering a free copy of Shogun 2 with the purchase of the 2600k processor or intel SSD. I dont believe I will have any issues maxing Total War on my new Sli'd gtx570 build.. :D
