So I had the 17 for a while and I was thinking of trading it in for the 14. I carry my laptop around everywhere and the weight of it is starting to get to me, mainly because I tend to carry more than just my laptop around (books, etc). The other thing was the fact that I thought I would be playing more PC games but the only thing I really play is Minecraft, and I can't see myself playing any other PC games in the future. I also thought I'd get the base GPU and upgrade to a better one in the future, but I don't see that as a possibility either. So with that said, can i actually trade in my 17 for a 14? (Dell/Alienware rep if you see this, help please!)

You'd have to sell it and buy the 14. The trade in options aren't really very good from Dell directly.

I'd sell it like simon said. You could probably get a decent amount towards a new 14 or even a good used 14.

I'd get both but then it's not realistic for many and I have trouble maintaining two PC's at any one time.

If sell the 17 then buy like previously mentioned. AW offered me $125 for a aw 17r3 with crossfire 5870's I think was two years ago.

If minecraft is the most intensive thing then yeah the base 14 will be fine. I put all my machines through there paces with battlefield all the time. The 14 handles it pretty well but it ain't not 780m that's for sure.

Do not use the Alienware "trade-up" program. While I love to promote Alienware, this service is simply horrible.

Any kind of dealer trade-in generally sucks. They need to make a profit, but their profit margin target is absurd. (They may even make more profit than selling new because they buy at unreasonably low prices and and then grossly overprice the used product.) As a result you almost never get even remotely close to what a computer, appliance or automobile is truly worth. You're better off selling it yourself for a lot more than getting hosed. Computer buy-back and trade-in programs are horrible. I've never seen a good one, and Alienware is not the only company that has offered this. Look at what they offer to pay for a used computer and then look on their company outlet stores or eBay for what they are actually selling for and you will see what a bad deal you are getting. In many cases it is like 5% to 10% of the actual resale value.

Why not sell it to one of us on the forums. We would likely give you twice as much as dell would lol.

We do have a trade in program that you could use but you will likely get a little bit more for your PC selling it on the NBR Marketplace.

The 17 and 18 are great machines but to be brutally honest there are better options than the 14 out there.

It desperately needs the 860m but it always seems to be the machine they want to put the bear minimum of work and materials in.

Can you give some? I like the power and potential as well as durability of my 17 but I don't know how much more I can manage the weight besides cutting some things that I carry along with it?

I must chime in fearfully but I'm pretty sure that most people with an AW14 would be very glad to trade in their 14 in exchange for a 17. It's all about perspective really. It's sad that you are having trouble with the weight though. I presently carry my M18x to and from school, work and you name it. A good backpack is probably what you really need to invest in. Remember one thing, your muscles will get stronger as you use them but your computer wont.

Personally, I take a lot of pride when I'm lugging that massive beast around. To be able to access all my information at a moment's notice and not sacrifice power is the main reason why I bought an alienware in the first place.
