Hello again,
Before I ordered these, I just wanted to double check that they would work with my Alienware M17x R1 (The one that came out in summer of 2009). I believe the standard sound card supports 5.1. What do you guys think about getting these? They have only been released within the past month or two.
I was also considering the Logitech 35's but I only have a dual core and I get occasional bad frame rate drops as it is; without a USB headset hindering the CPU even more.
Thanks for reading. I look forward to hearing from you guys.
***In short, I have a green port, a gold port, a black port, and a pink port. The picture for the Trittons are showing green, black, pink and RED(which I do not have). I have never seen a sound card with a red port. Will this headset work properly without a red port? Link again: http://store.gameshark.com/viewItem.asp?idProduct=5136&idCategory=317

Do you have 5 outputs on your laptop? If so you can use that, if not you will need a USB decoder card for "true" 5.1.
However, I have used almost every model Tritton and I have been disappointed with every single one. Get a set of Astro A40's with the MixAmp. It is "virtual 5.1" but trust me, it's MUCH better than Tritton's implementation of 5.1 on a headset. -
well, as each TRS jack is already stereo, you only need three plugs for 5.1
-
I have 4 output jacks for audio on the right side of the laptop. One green, one yellow, one black, and one pink. Also, I am in no mood to spend $200 on a headset. I've been using ipod earphones for the past year, so basically anything better than those will do.
-
So even though the picture of the headset is showing 4 audio plugs and a usb, I will only need 3 of the plugs and the usb? Do you know which 3 I would need to use?
-
ah, I see what you mean. The headset is using 5.1 (so it needs at least 3 jacks), and a mic...
Hmm.... I'm at a wee bit of a loss as to help you on this headset, I'm sorry!

I could really use some more input on these. Edited original post to make more sense.

I would tell you to get the Turtle Beach HPA2's over the trittons. In the arena of true 5.1 headsets the HPA2's are the best I have used.( these are the ones I can truly compare to my 5.1 Sony home theater set up) I have used the AX pro's and the AX 720's both of which I returned. The HPA2's will also work with the R1 and has color coded gold plated plugs for easy installation. They have a built in amplifier, A breakaway plug so you won't pull the laptop if you want to get up and walk around. The cord is long but can be tied with the velcro straps on the cord. They cost around $70 might be able to get them cheaper and they are comfortable for long gaming sessions.
Headsets I own:
Audio Technica AD-700's
Senheiser HD 595
Turtle Beach HPA2's
Audio Technica ATH- M50
Headsets previously owned:
Tritton AX PRO
Tritton AX 720
Razer Carchariasis
Beats Pro(worst headset on the planet)
Also the Trittons you linked just use a reddish orange for the plug which is the same as Orange they will work fine, if you choose to get them. On the laptop the yellow plug = orange.
The green is front R&L
the Yellow/gold/orange is C/sub
the black is Rear R&L
and the pink is a mic -
Thanks for the post Mkelliny. I really appreciate it!

No problem man!
I just compared the specs for the HPA2's to the Trittons you posted.
I recommend that you avoid the trittons.

You tried the HPX compared to the HPA2?
-
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
The HPX and the HPA2's are identical the HPX comes without the in line amp. The HPA2's come with the in line amp.
other than that they are the same. You can also buy any of the accessories for either as they are interchangeable. -
The HPX looked like the ear cups were much thicker from the pictures. I like to drown out all noise
-
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
Trust me with these on and even not that loud they will drown out all noise.
"Sound-
Going from the HPX’s to the A40’s, the difference was pretty noticeable off the bat. The a40’s are kind of hollow sounding. I found myself turning up the volume to get anywhere near the same impact as I did with the HPX’s. It still performs ok for directional positioning, but the clarity just isn’t fully there. To put it in perspective, for the spectrum of headphones, the headsets we’ve tested place between HD515’s and HD555’s, for clarity anyways. While the HPX and PC350 lean towards the 555 end, the Astros lean towards the 515’s. " this is a quote from a review which compared the a40's to the HPX/HPA2's.

I was about to pull the trigger on the HPA2 but I just noticed they have been replaced with the Z6A's as of 2 days ago.
What should I do? Lol.
EDIT: Nevermind, they reduced the speaker size by 10mm on everything except the center and added an XBOX cable, big whoop =/
EDIT 2: I just read reviews on Newegg and it has the same issues my Tritton's did. Hissing and small beeps when there's no audio going through the speakers and it hurts your ears after a little while. I could use the Trittions for an hour before I had to take them off because they were compressing my ears.
EDIT 3:
Nevermind at all. Apparently I have to wait until Z6A's are for sale, the HPA2 has been completely discontinued. -

Congrats man! I'm sure you will enjoy them They truly are Awesome for gaming and Movies. The Dark Knight sounds amazing on them watching the blu ray right now with the SB X-FI pro. So much Detail and clarity. -
I don't need it for movies, my home theatre has a 400 watt RMS sub and 65 watt rms satellite speakers on an HK AVR 2600
Just specifically gaming on this laptop at my office
-
Just got them in today. The 5.1 adapter is not amplified...How the hell am I supposed to use this?
EDIT:
Do I actually need the amplifier since I am using the creative?
It's an extra $50 + ship http://store.turtlebeach.com/hpa2in-lineamplifierusbconnection.aspx -
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
You may not need the amplified Cable. If everything sounds good on the Soundblaster than don't worry about the amplifier. -
I can BARELY hear the "subwoofer" it makes a very small sound in the sound test. How loud is yours?
-
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
pretty loud, but in the windows sound test it is a small sound. In game though it should be loud. -
That isn't the "sub" that's something else...The volume dial says "Vibratoin" is that NOT the subwoofer?
-
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
On mine it says - Sub +. It says vibration on yours, I assume that it would be the sub. Are you talking about the Windows Sound Test? If so then that sounds low even with my AMP. How does it sound in game? or with Music? -
It sounds fine in game and with music...I really don't think the HPX and HPA2 are the same. Why discontinue one of them?
I think they are built differently. But yes, it does say vibration, NOT subwoofer. It doesn't affect in-game bass at all, it sounds like the bass is coming off of each of the speakers. -
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
Well I wouldn't worry to much about it, but yes the HPX and the HPA2's are the same I gurantee it only difference is the amp/no amp line. Which if you really feel you need the amp you can just purchase it(even the new amp for the HPA2 replacement should work.) I am actually thinking of buying that new amp just because it has the mic mute feature. -
I am telling ya...The "Vibration" does absolutely NOTHING.
I turned it all the way down and up, NOTHING is affected. I don't care about a Mic mute feature, sell me yours and buy a new one

I personally prefer my Tritton PC 510 or my Ax51 pro over my Hpa2 headset. The main reason I like the Trittons is that I have had no problems with them in the sense of breaking and sound quality. The PC 510s aren't even on newegg, they only have the ax pros and ax51 pros. which both had hissing problems, (new ax pros do not)
My Hpa2s broke on the 2nd day I had them, (i take extremely good care of my electronics) it just stopped working... I sent them in for a replacement which I got but these broke on the top head rail area. I sent them back again and I got a pair that worked perfectly. They sound good, and have good directional sound, but I prefer my Ax51 pro's sound by a long shot. The Pc 510's improved on most aspects of the Ax51 pro's and fixed most of the problems with it. Now the sound from the Pc 510's are even farther ahead than the Hpa2s.
I give my Pc 510 a 9.5/10
I give my Ax51 pro a 9.0/10
I give my Hpa2 a 8,5/10 (for me it broke easily and sound quality was not as good as either trittons. I must say however Turtle Beach's customer support is SOOOOO much better than tritton's. [Relative to December 10th 2010.] They were quick to answer questions and quick on replacing my product. I had to contact Tritton's support just takes a while..
