Today a very weird problem has started on the USB 2.0 ports of my m17xR3. When I hook up my Alienware TactX mouse, or an Xbox 360 Controller, they WILL NOT be detected by the computer, while on the USB 3.0 ports or eSATA/USB port they are instantly detected.

Here is a video of what happens when I plug my TactX mouse into the port: Alienware Tactx mouse - YouTube

And when I plug the Xbox Controller in (At 11 seconds is when I pull the cord out to put it into the USB 3.0 and 17 seconds is when it actually is in): Xbox controller - YouTube

    EDIT:
This problem seems to have fixed itself when I uninstalled the mouse and controller driver and then let them reinstall. I will watch to see if this weird problem happens again.

I thought this was fixed, but now in the same 2 usb ports, my mouse gets turned off for about 5 -10 seconds then turns itself back on, about every 10 - 15 minutes while I'm playing a game.

Can anyone please help me with this problem?

Today it is happening on all of the usb ports! (even the usb 3.0) :(

Thank you for any help on this weird problem! :D

Maybe the problem isn't with your USB ports! If you can try using your mouse with an other laptop or a pc and see if the problem is repeating it self. If you don't have an other laptop or a pc, try using some other USB product you may have and observe if the problem is still there.

If all the above fails, then go into the system properties and then device configuration and uninstall the USB driver(s) or just download and install the dell USB drivers over the current once. Restart your laptop and see what happens. I hope that the above information can help you.

I've tried my Mouse and xbox controller on another computer, and they both work fine. I've even gone in device manager and uninstalled the mouse and all usb hub drivers, and restarted to let them reinstall, and they did work for a hour or 2, but then it started to happen again. While my mouse and Xbox controller can't connect to the computer, an old flashdrive will still be detected by the computer.

It sounds like you have a hardware problem there. It could be that your USB devices do not get the required power to keep the USB devices running. What I would suggest is that if you are still in your warranty, call dell up and get them to replace your mother board.

I called Alienware yesterday, and they have a tech coming out sometime today to replace some parts!

I'm hoping that the motherboard is with this, because the descriptions from the dispatch details are not good at all:
    SERVICE KIT...,PRINTED WIRING ASSY...,THERMALPAD,ANW,M17XR
    ASSEMBLY...,FRAME...,KEYBOARD...,M17XR3

    Thanks DarkStreetS! :D

There should be an option to turn off the fact that the system turns off USB hubs to save power. Don't remember where it is, but I would look into that. Maybe in your power options, or even in the bios. But probably under the power management area. Have you checked that?

The tech came earlier with the parts (with the motherboard :) ), didn't know how to take it apart, he kept trying to pull out parts that were still screwed in, :( and he put it back together and it works, but there are a few problems:

It's slower than before, the mouse and Xbox controller still disconnect (I think the mouse is dying now because its starting to skip on other computers, but doesn't disconnect), screen brightness changes by itself, SD cards aren't detected, and Zone 4 for the alienFX lighting flashes to pink or white quickly, then goes back to its normal color.

Most of the technicians are good, but unfortunately there are some which aren't! I suggest that you get back to dell ASAP with the details you have expressed here and ask them to put things wright. They should have fixed your problems and not create new ones for you.

I called Alienware about these problems, and it seems that it was a windows problem, as they had me reinstall it and most of the problems are gone. :D

The only thing that is still wrong is the mouse is dead (now it won't connect to any computer), but everything else will work in the usb ports, so at least I know they are working properly! :D
