    Hi folks...

It has recently come to my attention through these forums that USB 3.0 is soon likely to be available for many laptops....possibly including my "ordered" m17x - UK VERSION!

Thing is, mine is due to ship with USB 2.0 which i guess is of no major concern but i would like to ensure i get usb 3.0 if at all possible.

My current order is due to ship to me on 21st June - and i have heard alot of unofficial rumours that E3 may well release this update for the m17x within the next couple of weeks.

I dont know if anyone has any information to support this....actually, i have heard that a few people have already received their m17x WITH the USB 3.0 upgrade already.

I would be extremely grateful if anyone has any info on this or any experience with this - indeed if any of you out there have had your new "babies" delivered with usb 3.0 , would be great to hear from you.

None of the M17x's, R2 included, have USB 3.0 To incorporate USB 3.0 would require a motherboard revision which I don't see happening till Q1 2011. I could be wrong, but thats the best of my knowledge.

It's actually part of the motherboard, but would also require additional programming. Best bet at this point is to get an expresscard with 3.0 though.

Not going to happen. At least not right now. USB 3 will be out eventually, but i dont think anyone is going to widspread impliment it until near the end of this year or the beginning of next.

As with anything computer related this might change overnight, but i doubt it.

If you absolutely need USB 3 (wich would be rare as very few things even use it yet) you'll have to deal with an expressport card

I dont specifically need it, its just that as i have placed an order a few days ago, i heard rumours that this may be something that AW are possibly doing in the very near future.
Of course, for me, it would make sense that IF it were to be announced, say in the next few weeks after E3, then i would hold off till then just for the "futureproof" element of having a laptop already equipped with USB 3.0 instead of 2.0

Its not a deal breaker - just something id rather have if at all possible in the very near future.

HP has USB 3 on many models. Dell offers USB 3 on the M6500. It just takes an added daughterboard, but that is a change to the internals, not simply a plug in item.

For now, to get it you'll need to use and Expresscard on the M17x or wait and see if a revision comes. Possibly a revised M17x might come with the advent of the 480M equipped versions, but no on is sure of that. Alternatively you could look over the HP models or see if the M6500 suits you. I think the M17x is better than those options, but of course everyone judges tradeoff's slightly differently. So it's up to you.

M17x refresh is possible, but no one is sure when it might come. And even if it does, it might just offer the 480M. I hope it will include USB 3, but there is little word if it will.

Well, will see i suppose...i have my m17x on order as of now....if usb 3.0 comes out before 30th june, i can get it updated via dell taking back my order....if not....im just SOL....its not a biggie, just would have liked it....

Being new to computing, will an expresscard/usb 3.0 combo give the same performance?

As for the 480m, im gonna be happy with the x2 5870's - i think they represent better value for money and will be a better proposal in terms of economy to performance ratio etc.....
