    The M17x should be able to run Ubunto on VM quite easily. Unless there is a good reason to have it as your main, try this route instead.

    I installed it yesterday using the ubuntu windows installer.
    Download | Ubuntu

    It took like... 5 minutes and all drivers were working. WiFi, Sound, etc. I think graphics were auto updated once I was booted up.

    I was pretty amazed actually.

    Not sure about running it on a USB stick though.

    I work with linux, and i am forced to carry another laptop with me. It installs on all pc' s i tried it on but not on the m17xR2 (usb installation)

    Strange cos m17 has plenty of standard hardware

    I've toyed around with Kubuntu on mine, but honestly there really isn't much reason to do so.

    Win7 is just fine for most everything, finally (seriously wish I had skipped Vista...).

    try Sun VirtualBox....Easy to install & administer. I have a 2 cpu 32 bit Ubuntu Maverick running on my MX17. I like all the audio utilities available for free under Linux and use it for ripping/Copy CD's etc. Works great.

    Is running Linux on a virtual machine like Virtual Box or the likes an option or do you need to run Linux natively on your laptop? I'm running a Ubuntu image on VirtualBox for work on my M17x and it's good enough for my needs. It's quite comfortable, too, as I can run it within Windows, do stuff I need to do in Windows on windows, and simply switch task to Virtualbox and work in Linux for the stuff I need to do on Linux.

    I tried it many times on the R2. I think (which was confirmed by an ubuntu dev.) that some hardware on my system is not correctly detected

    there is no what to know what hardware cos no error is displayed

    @moudz
    I don't think that RAID is the problem cos I don't use raid on my setup

    @cueball12
    I disabled xfire by phisically removing secondary vga but ubuntu still refused to run (both x32 and x64)

    thanks all for the feedback !!

    These two threads ( 1 and 2) are greatly outdated but may provide some clues.

    I ran Ubuntu 10.10 off a usb flash disk on my M17x R2 no problems. Its what I used to secure erase my SSD. Booted off hte USB flash disk, did the erase, rebooted back and reinstalled windows 7. Nothing funky about my setup either, just regular spec, with twin 5870s.

    i had ubuntu dual booted on my R1. it worked fine, except it couldn't find my wireless card, so no internet, which caused me to quickly give up on it.

    i had the x64 version though, (cause i didnt know x32 had more stuff at the time).
