i have alienware m17x r4 3d model....GEforce GTX 675M.......mine runs on a fixed performance level 1 on battery and on charger it changes according to requirement (goes to performance level 3 when playing games like crysis).
so i tried to force performance level 3(using command prompt and nvidia inspector) when on battery to eliminate lag but it didnt change......this command(nvidia inspector. Exe - forcepstate0,0)is working only when i am plugged in....please help

This: View attachment 100721 if you have not done it will stop P1 drops in gaming: Of course at your own risk, I cannot verify the author, only that it worked for me and others, This also stops the voltage drop in P1.

P3 on battery is coded into the GPU vbios because when on battery the supply is not enough, so this is normal behaviour. If you did not have the 3D, like me, then the iGPU would cut in and gives acceptable performance in most games with a little compromise ;)

    HTH

Edit: Another dig at Dell: PLEASE, put this information about not being to game on battery, along with the reduced battery life overall, on the 3D notes. I must answer this question at least one a month  And customers are being misled!

Micky remember with certain vbios mods you can achieve gaming while on battery. I've posted this several times, it is indeed harmful to the battery but possible. It is not "hard" wired into the gpu, its "soft" wired due to this being able to change with changes to the vbios.

Well that's very cool. I always though wrong I guess. I was in a thread a long time ago but no solution 'due to insufficient battery power'. The M18x was able to if I remember right?

Can you point me at the how to. As you say, not reccomended and I have no need for it anyway, but nice to know more about it ;)

    Thanks,

Embarrassing moment if I was in that thread, goldfish brain sometimes

The bolded print is key, the battery doesn't have enough juice. BUT it can power it for short bursts if your not going over tdp of the battery. I've had shut downs etc etc. Now the reason I figured out this was possible is with SLV7's vbios mods to the Kepler series gpus. Somehow when he removes the throttling of the gpu it forces it to always stay in a state where it can boost whenever even when on battery. Head over to the Techinfernoe forums to learn more. The reason he edited them was you know in msi afterburner you cant overclock a kepler series past 135. Now with his mods it made it possible also gaming on battery. However it can over heat the battery and shut down the computer to due power over load.

(I could find the posts regarding to this but as of now I don't remember which page)

Pretty sure the battery in the M18x would fry if you tried running an overclocked extreme processor, and two 100 watt cards at full tilt, so you aren't off the mark.

Just curious but how many times have you been doing this? That type of thing is incredibly bad for your battery and I wouldn't be surprised if it was wearing x10 as fast as normal. ;)

Thanks again man. Makes perfect sense, kinda side effect of removing the boost limit. I believe I am using one of his vbios' to match the P states but mine is not a Kepler.

OT. Actually just reminded me of an interesting development with the 675m. Just had mine replaced after the nvidia driver burned it out and just for testing and assurance that it is now good, I left the vbios it came with AND dell updated my main bios. I have yet to see the P1 power throttle. Now I'm wondering about a 'stealth' fix, or maybe for some reason it is no longer drawing as much power? I did try a small OC but still no throttle. Now I'm obsessing about the absence of a problem  Time for a break

I barley ever do this, maybe 5 times in the past 3 months? I just like knowing I can do it.

I'd actually run some tests and see if this is true. Maybe you have the perfect vbios ;)

Just don't want some unlucky soul to not understand what they are getting into and seriously damage their machine. Glad it works though. ;)

EXACTLY as SAID this is not to be done multiple times, I'm just informing everyone here that you "can" do it.

What could be the worst case scenario if I force it to some pstate(shutdown /permanent battery damage?)...
On another note I wanted to know which software is the best to run 3d movies.
Is stereoscopic 3d different from the 3d where images seem to come out... Coz I see depth. Sorry for such questions... I am a beginner

I only tried a 3D movie once and just used the Cyberlink software that came with the laptop.

It is a very different system from the NV one. It sends both images side-by-side and the software figures it out to interlace them for the glasses. Frame rates are low and effectively you have 50% resolution along with 50% FPS to each eye.

Usually for me all I see is depth but if you run the 'Test stereoscopic 3D' in the driver the spinning logo should pop right out of the screen towards the end of the demo. There may be adjustments for games, check the drivers keyboard shortcuts for them.

Awesome to put your hand through the NV logo, kinda real holographic effect :D

Probably just a typo somwhere. If you save all the files into a new folder on your c: drive first. Call it nvflash.

Then type CMD in windows to open up a command prompt.

Type CD \nvflash (enter) and the prompt should change to c:\nvflash.

Type DIR (enter) to see all the files you expanded here earlier.

Then type: nvflash -b backup.rom and press enter

DIR again as above to confirm you have a new file titled backup.rom

    Finally type: nvflash name_of_new_rom_file -4 -5 -6 (press enter)

Answer Y to the warnings and when if finishes restart windows.

Just a warning though, this is making a fundamental change to the video card, never do this stuff on battery, and although I have not heard of anyone having serious issues there is a small risk.

675m.rom. The other one is for the people who do not mind risking burning out their card and want to overclock it higher -definitely not recommended ;)

If you see one of the posts above the vbios update only works on some cards. I have never managed to get full power on battery but there is a vbios for the 680m that does work - sorry for the timewaster, but you will not get any power throttle now when gaming on mains :D

Yeah I have the same config. I cannot game on battery (stuck at 75mhz), that vbios was only to fix another problem where it slows down during gaming. You could try looking over in techinferno where most of these vbios come from. You have to make 5 posts or donate to download and remember, you do risk killing your battery if you are successful :(
